Question Driving a 13 spd.

I NEED SOME ADVICE ON HOW TO DRIVE A 13 SPD.I WAS TRAINED ON A 10 SPD.WITHOUT USING THE CLUCHT.WHEN I READ THE BOOKS ABOUT SHIFFTING GEARS,THEY ALWAYS MENTION THE IMPORTANCE OF PROPER CLUCHT USE, MY QUESTION IS :CAN I FLOAT THE GEARS WHEN I GET TO DRIVE A 13,15,18,SPD? THANKS TO ALL OF YOU.

Sure you can float all the gears. You have both a range select and a splitter in a 13 speed, is all. Once you are in high range you split the gears. In an 18 speed you split low and high range.

15 speeds usually have a deep reduction unit to give you 5 more low range speeds. Don't see too many of those anymore. They were more for off-road use rigs where you wanted more engine speed at low MPH then first gear would give you in other trannies.

I was taught that clutches were used for stopping and starting...it will fall into the next gear in time with practice. Once you get a custom to the truck, or have been driving for awhile like the rest of us... it will be just like riding a bicycle, you won't forget.

Yes, what Stimpy said, I have been driving 30+ years, and have never used the clutch except when taking off from a stop.

The whole clutch thing is a myth. With many of the newer trans and trucks having hydraulic clutches many gear heads will say you have to use the clutch to keep it adjusted. If you look in the manual of your truck 90% of them, if you have one it will say the preferred method is progressive shifting. Once mastered you will be able to go to many of the other combos with ease.
