Default Dot medical cards

IF you work for a company that pays for your DOT medical exam and card. Can they demand its return if you quit or get fired?

It all depends on the company you work for.
Most of them make the rules as they go along.
Even if they had it in writing before you hired on
and they wanted to charge the DOT exam costs
from your last check, it will be up to you to sue
them in small claims court to try to get your money back.
Most people won't bother, and will go on with life.

It wasn't really a question of charge. One of the drivers was fired and they demanded his DOT medical card as well as his company ID. I was wondering if they owned the DOT card since they paid for the exam.

They never gave him a chance to pay for it or deduct it from his pay. They said they paid for it so they are taking it back. he will have to get a new one before he can drive for someone else.

As a professional driver you are required to have three things: A CDL with the required endorsements, a medical card, and a background check. Owner Operators have to pay their own way. Company drivers always have to pay for their CDL. Some companies pay for the medical card and or the background check. If they do, then these documents are yours. Check your medical card, you won't see the company's name mention. Send them a copy and tell them to buzz off. TP

I agree with everything you said.
I think the medical card stays with the driver.
Driver can just tell the company that they left it
at home or lost it.
This must be a real cheap fly by night carrier.
