nothappywife is on a distinguished road
Default Wife with questions. Please help!!!!

My husband and I have been married for 17 years and all those years he has wanted his CDL to drive OTR. It is what his father did while he was growing up. Until now he has never had the opportunity.
He is now drawing unemployment and his mom said she would help him out. He has moved from our home in TN to his mother's in CO temporarily to get his CDL.
I was completely naive, uneducated, and misinformed on this subject. I thought he would go there, go to a CDL school, get his CDL, and come home to a job where he would be home alot. In the past few days I have found out that that is not how it works. I cannot live with him gone all the time. I did not get married to wake up to an empty bed all the time and raise the kids by myself. I have read that most new drivers have to take the crap runs and are gone most of the time.
I have also read that now is not the time to try to get into truck driving because of the economy.
I need some great advice from some of you who know what you are talking about. Please help!

if he drives over the road you can expect him to be gone a week or more and be home a day or 2

I hate it, I have been driving for 40yrs., tell him it not great starting out as a new driver, you work for the most hole companys for the first few years (some companys still paying "1973" wages $35,000. to $40,000., out of pocket money, out on the road for 1,2,3,4 weeks at a time and no family life), until you get some driving years. How to the worst, lost my first wife to driving and lost 13 years, working, not watching my kids growing up. I had to start all over again, taking care of my kids which are grow up now (39 & 41). I learn a a lot about family and the trucking business over the years. Things have change in this business today, I have been in some bad economy times over the years and this is the worst I have seen it in 40yrs. I work for a great LTL company for years making double then (1973) wages. I am happy, 2nd wife and 12 grandkids which I enjoy. I hope this helps you, trucking is a hard business and you will always have a job driving. I do not want to tell you, to tell him to stop. I am just letting you and him know whats out there.
