ya know, i always wondered about this.......

every state that i had traveled thru, will always have some area where they had to blast mountianous/rocky areas to put a highway thru.

i always would see where the blasting stopped at such a point that made no sense. i mean c'mon, they KNOW the rocks will fall, why do/did they have the safety fences put up...??

why couldn't they blast further into the hills to account for this to happen...?? then if anything DOES fall, there would have been a MUCH WIDER area for the rocks to stop.

clean up would still be needed however to eliminate future slides from piling up on top of the last slide.

always made me wonder, with the money they get from the guberment, why blasting stopped at a certain location...............just enough for the road to get on by...

Thumbs up

Highway 39 in Southern California (Ranger309 area) has been blocked by Nature (rock slides) since the 70s so much so that the Forestry Service and the State decided NOT to clean it up as there is only more Mountain remaining to tumble down. It was initially a bad idea of a road because of the Altitude and angle of Mountain. I'm sure it's good for suicidal skiers!!
The Road is closed just past Crystal Lake--actual place, so now you know where Jason was hanging out--and closed at Rt. 2 (Angeles Crest Highway).
It's however open to the hiking public yet few venture very far.

West Virginia seemed to have a bit more intellect when constructing their roads through their Mountains as they LAYERED as they cut as is clearly evidenced on Rt. 19 (shortcut from I-77/64 to I-79) as well as other Roads.
Also so did Kentucky as evidenced on 9AA from I-64 to Cincinnati, OH.
- - -
There is only so much Mountain that can be blasted before there is not enough remaining to keep, or it can be Tunneled yet this isn't feasible everywhere because of Geology.
- - -
It would be neat to be a part of the crew removing the Slide. Wish I was closer to it!!
Thank you Jeff for the Picture.

DO NOT TRY TAKING THIS ROUTE unless you're a swift Driver:
Tail of the Dragon at Deals Gap and Cherohala Skyway, Graham Co, NC

The North Carolina Department of Transportation says it will take three months to clear the debris from a rock slide in Haywood County and reopen Interstate 40 to traffic.

The NCDOT announced a three-step plan Tuesday to deal with the situation at the three mile marker of I-40 near the North Carolina/Tennessee border.

Three months? If this happened on a Rail Road track. It might take three weeks.

You don't understand...
They are going to use "Stimulus" money to clear this.
Gotta get it approved for using this money.
Gotta clear the possible contractors who are capable of doing this.
Gotta check and see if any particular contractor is "connected".
Gotta see if the "preferred" contractor is connected to the preferred party.
Preferred contractor gotta get financing to rent equipment for the job.
Gotta line up operators from a "local" local to run the machines.
Gotta set a start date and eliminate the completion penalty clauses.
Gotta get with this heavy hauler out of Cleveland,TX. to see if he is sober enough, has fuel money left, and is not deer hunting.

So slack the chains; hang the binders back up, THESE THING TAKE TIME..

P.S....
(A pity Blount Bros out of Montgomery, Al is no longer is business. Blount could have cleared it by noon tomorrow and removed the runways they flew the Cat's and mine trucks in on.)
