Even in good economic times, there's been drivers that didn't observe hours of service rules.Outlaw drivers and the outfits that have them always can come up with some bull justification for this behavior, these people were doing this before I started driving 30 years ago, they'll still be doing it long after I retire,Law enforcement (or lack of)shares some of the blame,I havent had a trooper ask to see my log book in close to 20 years, mainly because up until last year I worked at night, the only times you see a state trooper at 0200 out here is when they've been called out to clean up an accident.

i have read the article and it sickend me to no end. now i have to ask questions myself, including, was the driver born american, or not. i suspect NOT. was the driver even PROPERLY TRAINED at ANY REAL trucking school? even a "born" american can have a serious accident, this i know, but i truely got to believe that the ignorance of "foreingers" is paramount in this country.

until we END the foreign influx or intrusion into this country, we will CONTNIUE to have ignorant people driving big rigs.

am i totally against foreigners from coming into america...??

at one time NO.........

but now.........( as of a few years now) a RESOUNDING YES...........

and this accident (amoungst other things in the trucking world), gives fodder to our detractors that see no end in sight for thier clamping down on us with rules, regualtions, laws, etc, etc, making it HARDER for the AMERICAN truck driver to make a living.

and in closing, the trucker lived..........but he does face charges, but this was from 2008...?? i don't know of any updates since that time, but we should find out if he got jail time, and hopefully, it WAS A LONG TIME behind bars.......

why don't they just require the truck mileage to be put down on every line that is drawn, then it would be easy to catch log book violators

Actually the Vehicle Inspection Report has a line for odometer/hubometer mileage. Since the change in HOS it is now MANDATORY that EVERY truck driver (subject to HOS) fill out a POST TRIP INSPECTION report at the end of his/her shift.

I have not had a DOT officer ask for mine but the info is available.

The original gets sent into the company and the copy remains with the truck until the end of the month. Then the completed book also gets sent into the company.

This creates a paper trail of every mile the truck was driven as well as any defects detected by the driver. Each component is listed and must be checked off as well as the date and time the inspection was performed as well as the drivers signature certifying said truck is without defects and is safe to drive.

Just one more piece of info to help convict a driver.

Economic situations/events make MANY PROFESSIONS DANGEROUS and Trucking is but one of them.
Whatever Profession one is in/of, one will see many accidents, like WE see or about which WE read!
One can EASILY work say in a Warehouse for eight hours THEN climb into a Combo and drive for 11 or the other way as well.
One can drive ones 4 wheeler to a yard up to 8 hours away to get a Combo and some companies will expect a Driver to then get along little doggy up to 11 hours, so go figure, and some People wonder WHY there are TIRED DRIVERS, hmmm.

$1,000-1,200 a day driving?? Where are these opportunities??
At .30 cpm x 1,000 miles = $300.00, so where does the other $700-$900 come from??
Someone has something crossed up somewhere.
