Alright, so I went and got my permit yesterday. Now I need to find a truck to start learning on. I know an O/O and when I mentioned the possibility of getting my CDL and needing a truck he said "We'll cross that bridge when we come to it..." That leaves the feeling that he doesn't really want to let me use his rig, which is understandable.

Would I be wise to maybe look for a local company that may be willing to give me training for the skills? I know one of my friends dads once told me he would help me get my CDL so I may call him up and see if the offer is still on the table, as he has his CDL and is the boss of a small building supply company and has access to the trucks they run.

I'd rather avoid trucking schools if possible. I'd rather not be giving them 1-2 years of my life.
