Absolutely right about hauling fuel.

I find it to be a great job. (Most of the time).

I work a full log book 5 days on, reset, 5 days on, 3 days off. I work regional, and spend 4 nights in the sleeper.

Here, in Canada, we run super-B trains. 8 axles, with both trailers equipped with fifth wheels. Gross weight 140,000#, Tare weight is 44,000#. That leaves a lot of payload.

we are restricted to 100 KMH (62 MPH).

The earnings of our drivers varies between $45,000 and $125,000 a year, depending on how much you want to work. Last year, working the above schedule, my earnings with bonuses and profit share was just over $115,000.

The company has something big in the works right now, as we are looking for 82 drivers. Hiring bonus, paid over 2 years, is either $5000( non fuel qualified) or $7000 (fuel qualified). Training is provided with pay. New drivers do not have to go through the 2 year earnings stages, so they would start at 100% pay rate, instead of 95%.

Fuel and tankers is not for everyone, but there is not often any layover time. If there is, there will be layover pay, up to 14 hours per 24.

There are days that I think I should move on, but those days are getting fewer every year.

Default Crude oil transport...

Anybody know anything about crude oil transport companies like Sunoco etc...pay scale benefits and such? I know its a 12 hour five day work week with daily home time but otherwise I'm in the dark.

I pull an oil tanker in the oil patch in central Canada,pay here can range from 18-25 dollars/ hr. some o/o's pay overtime and some don't,some o/o have benefits and some don't.
Shifts here can vary from 3days on,4off.7days on 7 days off,7/3 7/4 or 5 days on 5off 2on 2off which I am currently working,which isnt bad I have every 2nd weekend off and I'm off during the week for a couple days.

As far as hours the trailer company we pull for has pushed some long hours on us in the past,usually put in about 13 hours/day.

If you drive for a private o/o,ask about truck maintenance...who does oil changes,greasing etc.,find out how old the truck is and how often equipment is upgraded.
If you are an o/o ask your trailer company about scheduling,pay periods,possible route contract,and truck washes,driver hiring as they usually have some say in who you hire.

De-Regulation killed Fuel hauling.. Around here local delivery pays about 30 bucks. the rest percentage, if you work hard and put in about 70+ hours you might make a little over a grand. So many fuel hauling outfits are competeing to get the bizz so when the rates get cut you get a pay cut.... I hauled fuel for awhile and actually loved it but the pay was way less than stellar, considerring what you are hauling...

Man you couldn't be more wrong with the color coded lids I drive fuel tanker right now and the lids are White--reg Blue--midgrade red--premium Yellow---diesel green--heatoil

Thats odd.

Out here on the west coast Blue is Premium and Red is Regular and White is Midgrade. I have seen both yellow and green used for diesel#2

Don't have heating oil #1, as propane is what everyone uses for heat out here.
