Coming from a union family, I also have lots of experience working in management and non union labor positions. I can definitely say union is better, without question. It does not matter whether your talking about pay, benefits or working conditions.
What I would like to see improved in the teamsters is solidarity. I would like to see our leaders taking an active role in promoting our well being, not a reactive role. The standard response to anyones complaint is "Do you go to the meetings?". Hello, Wake Up Call!!! Going to a meeting, unless you have specific business to address or are a steward or on a committee is relatively pointless. You will not learn anything significant, that you should not be able to get off the locals web site, if it were properly setup, or from periodic emails or videos that could be sent to you electronically. The bottom line is you pay your locals officers to cover you're back, promote union values in your area and to inform brothers effectively how their contract can and should be working for them. If you're local doesn't do this, then you need to find officers who will.
