Pay attention to all press releases that pertain to UPSF and the Teamsters Union that involve negotiations for a contract. It is my opinion, in reading between the lines, that UPSF is seeking to be separate from the NMFA and the Teamsters Union is going along with this, and maybe that is why UPS Corp. agreed so easily to the card check method. The chief negotiator for the union is Ken H, Vice President of the Small Package Div. and Tyson J is taking the back seat. Why is this happenning? It appears that there may be a contract that will mimmick some of the NMFA, but remain separate within UPS Corp. As long as the Teamsters Union receives contributions such as dues, health and welfare, pension, etc... then they achieved what they set out to do. In making this point, it is my view, that the UPS only locals may benefit while freight only locals will gain nothing. Where there is UPS and Freight members in the same local, they may gain something. The purpose of this opinion, is that after all those years of trying to organize Overnite under the NMFA, not only to increase membership and contributions into these funds, but also to increase the number of Freight members to stand shoulder to shoulder in negotiations on a contract pertaining to what your labor is worth.
This is all speculative, but watch out, and pay stricted attention to who is negotiating this contract and once locked in that's it.
