They did it in an age when the customer was happy to get their freight whenever it showed up. It's a much different animal today. I'm not saying they couldn't do it....just that it'd hurt them worse than not doing it.

New England and the Mid-Atlantic is a very strategic part of the US and much freight goes in and out. Now, I'm not saying that Conway is very anti-labor and anti-worker in general but it would cripple their entire network to do as you suggest they would. In the competitive environment we all live in they can't afford to do it.
They care about as much for the customers as they care for thier employees. Most companys, atleast the shipping department don't know who's who in the trucking community. The day conway freight shuts down and menlo wordwide comes knocking at their door will simply be another day in shipping for them, just another company coming after business. They won't put 2 and 2 together.

That may be true for the people who you see on the shippers docks but probably not the traffic Mgr. who sits in the office and deals with your salesmen.

This whole should we or shouldn't we debate reminds me of an abused housewife. Sorry for the corny analogy but it does remind one of a mistreated gal who is disrespected, her allowance is slowly deteriorating to the point where she barely can afford lunch money for the kids. While her fat and bloated husband hordes the fortune all to himself. He kicks her around on a daily basis, but she still can't dig up enough self respect to put her foot down and yell at the top of her lungs ENOUGH IS ENOUGH!!!! She sits and fantasizes about a day that will never come, by the goodness of his heart. A day when he shows respect to the one who keeps his home in order. A day where he rewards her monetarily for her hard work. She thinks about acquiring outside representation, but worries he will kick her to the curb. The morale of the story is, if you feel abused, cheap and dirty working for a company that has no intentions of making changes on their own, then you have to be willing to help them change. There are plenty who will be glad to except your employment if you are kicked to the curb. Elvis out....

with con-way have terminals so close to each other they could if they wish shut down a terminal and run the freight out of one thats close by.

example:
Columbus oh has 3 out laying terminals that could hand our work if Columbus would close. and the customer would never know that Columbus closed.and the same thing could be said for the out laying terminals.

I imagine that the main Columbus terminal is a pretty big one. Would the other 3 have the dock space available to handle it or are they pretty well running near capacity now?
