Conway has spent 25 years ( give or take ) developing their network of terminals to better service customers. With all of the pressure on management to increase operational efficiencies, Con Way would think twice about shutting down a terminal because it voted union. In my immediate area, they have terminals in Pittsburgh ( Neville Island ) and Irwin, Pa which are roughly thirty miles apart. If the Irwin terminal, for instance, decided to vote union, there is no way the company would want to service say Greensburg, Pa from Neville Island due to traffic congestion and stem times. On a P&D route, the faster you unload and reload means more profit to Con Way, and everyone wants their employer to make money. But, the hours spent sitting in traffic or simply driving to an outlying area is dead, unprofitable time for Con Way. And remember, management has strategically placed their terminals for optimum service and efficiency, right ? Also, as somebody touched on earlier, the company would have to think about capacity. Sure, Con Way could possibly reroute freight around a potential Union terminal, but in how many cases would they actually have the room to do so ? In some scenarios I'm sure they could, but in alot of cases they would simply not have the space. So, for you folks that are worried about your jobs if you join the union, maybe you should be concerned anyway because Con Way would not keep an unprofitable terminal, union or not. I'm not wishing anybody ill will, because in this day and age we all ( union or not ) need our good jobs to preserve our way of lives. IMO, the IBT helps us achieve that ultimate goal. Good luck to all.
