| | | Just got hired at Pyle
Hey guys,
After over a month of job hunting, I just got hired by A. Duie Pyle as a full-time dockworker. They are starting me out at $14 an hour w/ full benefits after 3 months of service. They also say that they have a ton of overtime available right now.
While the package is very good, I feel I may have gotten more had I held out for a spot at a union company. The following example though, doesn't paint a rosy portrait of that.
I was offered a casual dock position at Yellow a couple of weeks ago, for $15.75 an hour. However they only had 1-2 days a week of work for me. The rest of the week I would have to shape. I have a 40 hour a week job now and I would have had to quit it in order to be "on call" for Yellow. 2 days week, even at a higher rate, doesn't add up when the bills have to be paid.
In addition, as a casual I would receive no health benefits. I'm currently paying for my own insurance out of my pocket and I could really use a job with medical.
Overall, I'd say I made the right move and I look forward to starting my new job.
Any Pyle people (past and present) have any insight that they wish to share? Thanks.

im not sure how it workswhwew you are, but in boston, yellow would begin paying for your benefits beginning with hour one. if you got at least 30 hours a week, you'ld have coverage in 2 or 3 months... a good question to ask the shop steward, it's his job to know these details

My friends would rather be working on a union job , but they don't want to work nights on the dock
Did you try ABF 4 miles away in Avenel ? They are begging for full time help. They will help you get your CDL. They have a 1 list (combo) job.
You would start at the casual rate at around $16 per hr. Overtime paid after 8 hrs. Benefits contributions are paid to the union for each day worked.
But you have to work 12 days in a month in order to get medical benefits for the following month.
Its a good place to work especially if you are looking to work the dock.
Take the job at ADP and stop over at ABF & fill out an application, it takes ABF about a month to process it anyway.
Good Luck

Yeah, I was thinking about ABF too. I called them and said I was looking for dock-work, and they said to come in and fill out an application. But if AVN has a combo list, I don't want it. I really don't have any interest in being a driver at this point. My experience is mostly as a forklift operator/warehouse worker, amongst other things.
I called a few other places in my area like New Penn and Roadway and they were looking for CDL's. I don't plan on getting one. I'll stick with Pyle for the time being and see how it works out. They seem to be a good co. to work for, based on what I've heard.

Good luck with the new job, if your just doing it as a way to work through college I understand not wanting your cdl, however if not then you might reconsider.
We have drivers at FXF that were dock hands, some were kinda forced to get their cdl's back when AF wanted everyone to have a cdl, however after getting it they worked the city and some have gone on to the road, now most of them want nothing to do with the dock, go figure, lol.

if those union jobs are with local 701 you are making a huge and i mean huuuugggeee mistake not giving it a shot. their pension is way sweet. find out and if it is give it a shot. you can pick up days at yellow, abf, roadway, usf, and new penn all at the same time. i'm not positive but i think those guys need to work 7 days each month to hold their health insurance. if you don't like the way it goes, companies like pyle, pjax, pitt ohio or any of those smaller ltl's are always hiring. as far as duie goes their work force seems to be stable and a pretty satisfied bunch. they're a decent company.
