I lost one Teamster job due to closure 9 years ago, and landed with another Teamster job. If following the work in a COO means keeping my job, then that's what I have to do. If I don't want to follow the work, then I have no right complaining about it. It was something I knew could and would happen, and make the adjustments accordingly. It is the nature of the industry. As mentioned before, layoffs occur for a few reasons....this slow economy is one of them, and losing freight to a lowball bottom feeder is another.
Having little knowledge about R & L, I am glad you are happy working there. I have heard about their employee "resort program", and their race car, but what about your benefits? Do you pay for medical coverage or have a pension plan with them, (other than a 401k)? Also, if they are so great, why is it that they farm out their NY Metro freight to a true bottom feeder?, instead of serving NY direct with their own employees? Preferably NY drivers that are in need of employment. |
As part of the Closure Agreement i will be able to collect on the 18 years ,However there are very few companies that will recipricate and participate in the plan ,of those that did i would of had to work for substatially less money and thus less contribution towards my pension.
I have a Handicapped Child who gets Excellent Services where we live so moving was never an option . Either was starting on as a Casual , I needed Steady employment so my Wife could take care of my Daughters
We do pay a little for our Medical 27 a Week for a Family , I will admit it's not as good as i had ,but it's not as bad as it could be, our retirement is only the 401K which to me is not a bad deal ,although i do know to many people are not disiplined enough to use one.Unfortunatley more and more companies are doing away with there pension plans and i agree that STINKS.
As to why R+L doesn't service all NY city with there own drivers i do not know . I would assume it has something to do with the plan they had to service all 48 states and Canada which they now do.I also assume know that California is open you may see them opening up more terminals a little closer together.
After going through what i did with the Teamsters i have a big problem with their leadership or lack there of. There willingness to in my perception to always fight to save the job of a man who usually is a screwup. That happened way to many times in my local it seemed the more useless you were the more they fought for your job.
I also have a big problem with some of long time Teamster members who feel they have to berate someone because they are not a TEAMSTER . You know if they would act a little more civil it may acctually help there cause to organize instead of push other drivers farther away
In closing we are all trying to do the same job and do not see why we always have to fight about who we work for. I do what i think is best for me and my Family and you do what feel is best for you and your Family. I have had life expierences that make want to stay away from the Teamsters and you prefer to stay with them I can accept your choice so please accept mine

How can you even consider calling the union carriers bottom feeders when, if it weren't for us, you'd be driving a truck for minimum wage and liking it. Union carriers have set the bar as far as wages and benefits are concerned. Just curious..........
Do you make over $23 per hour?
Do you have free medical coverage or do you pay? How much?
Do you have a pension? (Not a company matched 401k.)
Do you get paid time & 1/2 over 8 hours per day?
Do you get paid time & 1/2 over 40 hours per week?
Do you get time & 1/2 for Saturday work?
Do you get time & 1/2 plus the day for holiday work?
Do you get paid double time for Sunday work?
Do you get sick or personal days or holidays paid off?
Do you get paid for waiting time, drops & hooks, fueling or shop time?
Do you have the right to be represented in disciplinary cases?
Do you have protection against unfair termination?
Do you have access to a grievence panel for unjust treatment?
Do you have access to an arbitrator should a grievence panal not be sufficient?
On a personal note........
Do you own a house, 3 cars and 2 boats? IF NOT......DON'T YOU WISH YOU DID??
Laugh all you want but I thank my union for everything I have today,
and I retire in 5 years at the ripe age of 57. Laughing every day on the way to the bank. Animo916 OUT!! |

I have had life expierences that make want to stay away from the Teamsters and you prefer to stay with them I can accept your choice so please accept mine | I accept what you have done in order to protect yourself and your family. It's something we all have to do. If circumstances arose that my only choice would be nonunion, I would take it in a heartbeat, compared to not working. I know many Teamsters that lost jobs and couldn't land another Teamster job, that went to work in the nonunion sector. Having worked in and out of union jobs, it is just my preference. As you mention, what gets me is when people berate each other because of who they work for....Teamster or not. I have been a Teamster for over 20 years, and I try to convey my messages in an honest and forthright manner. It's only when someone gets me stirred up and I have to respond the only way they understand. Just look at my previous post and you'll see what I mean. You however seem to be able to see the differences and make a logical choice for your needs. My best wishes for you and your family.

I wouldn't work for the crappy union if they paid a $100.00 an hour an time and a half after 15 minutes, and double time after an hour... When you retire, I hope you won't worry about that pension that will go broke... I'll take my 401-k anytime. Yes I own a home, several of them actually...2 cars, a pick-up truck, and lots of land... Lots of money in retirement account, and other assets..However, I don't judge my life by how many material things I own...
One other thing, I don't constantly have to worry about getting laid off like you guys do...
Oh by the way, how do like the fact that those union dues you pay go to the democrat party ? Obama is probably your man anyway, he will take care of you bout like your union will.
All you read in the union forums is how terrible things are since Yellow bought ya'll out, an how Holland and Roadway are in trouble because of YRC's mismanagement.
Say what you will, but the future ain't with the union. The future is not bright for you guys, and when they disapear in the future, who is going to pay that pension. Oh yea I forgot, ya'll go to Obama to bail you out, and the taxpayers (ME) will have to bail you out.

If someone signs on with a company, they should know the positives and negatives beforehand. If you sign on,knowing the negatives, why b@#$H and moan about it.Unless you sign a contract, look elsewhere..

You would line up for that job like the little bracefaced lot lizard that you are. You really show some true ignorance with this post, my young grasshopper. Dues are not donated to any political party. There is a special donation for that, if you so choose. As far as political candidates are concerned. Name one endorsement, one piece of legislation, anything at all, that a republican candidate, has ever signed, introduced, publicly supported etc., in regards to labor conditions. I'll give you plenty of time to respond. Search your political archives until your fingers bleed, you will still not find one. I hate to inform you, but you and I are the working class. We need to start voting as such. I have been a republican all my life. And I am finally fed up with the political rhetoric that spews from the gop platform. Actually both sides of the aisle are guilty. But at least Obama endorses the employee free choice act. And is very supportive of organized labor. Your worst nightmare would be when the Teamsters are a memory. You have no comprehension, of why you enjoy, a pay and benefit package that is somewhat tolerable. Otherwise, you and others who post disparaging remarks, towards an organization that helped build the middle class, would think twice about doing so. You are a disgrace to the working men and women of this great country. And you should be ashamed of yourself. Teamster Elvis out..... ps. And you didn't strike a nerve jr. I have no nerves.
