The economy was the first excuse they used. (It played right into their hand and by no means am I saying it wasn't necessary to adjust for it) Now with all the low ball pricing the profits will suffer even more. When it comes time to satisfy the shareholders who will the companies put their hand out to? Keep your fingers crossed. I hope and pray I am wrong. If something happens to YRC and they can't continue on I guarantee you that the boardrooms will be abuzz with discussions involving profit increases through employee payroll and benefit reductions.
Well Lifer222, it looks like your prayers may be answered, at least for us over here at Con-Way. Our corporate headquarters announced today that we posted a profit of nearly 23 million in Q3. The said our tonnage was up by a little over 5% over Q3 of 2008 and that the board of directors wants to recognize our efforts by giving us back 1/2 of the wage cut we took last January. Imagine, if the big "Y" were to disappear, how much more money other companies could earn. They also told us that if we can achieve a certain operating ratio for two consecutive quarters, that we'll get back the other half of our wage reduction, plus our 401(k) match will be restored.

So where you say "boardrooms will be abuzz with discussions involving profit increases through employee payroll and benefit reductions." I have to respectfully disagree in light of today's events at my company.

But what if you miss the goals by just "this" much? Did you get those promises in writing?

This is what is so un nerving about the situation with all the ltl's in the industry. This pricing will also have a negative effect on your O/R. This will make your goals a difficult prospect at best. I wish you luck.

Commenting on the quarter, Con-way President and CEO Douglas W. Stotlar said, "Our operating companies have adjusted to the resetting economy. Overall, the business environment continues to present formidable challenges, characterized by weak demand, excess capacity and pricing pressure. We expect these conditions to persist in the near term, diminishing the prospects for earnings growth."

Con-way Freight continued to post sequential quarter-to-quarter 2009 tonnage growth while yield and profits declined due to several factors. "We made a strategic decision, implemented over the past two quarters, to improve network utilization and we met this objective," noted Stotlar. "Profits were constrained due to pricing levels, higher variable operating costs associated with the tonnage growth and lower fuel surcharge revenues. While pricing is likely to remain under pressure, we believe the increased network volumes put us in a better position competitively; we are now instituting specific measures to improve operating efficiency."

What is a "specific measure?" Does this mean line runs will be cut and those loads will go with purchase carriers?

Your guys on tb are saying you're getting2.5% back. And there are 3-4 pages so far of unhappy guys on this new thread:
2.5% of our wages will be given back in jan '10

When I read them it makes the poll quite believable..Sounds like they need a written legal contract to me.......
Maybe you can tell me......Does the CEO of Conway have one?
