If Virtue called the strike at Red Star which cost 1900 Teamster jobs then why didn't he get fired ?

I thought that when Hoffa got back into town from his "other" business that one of his IBT organizers named Murphy stepped up and fell on his sword to try and deflect the blame away from Hoffa & Johnson

The Red Star strike was poorly planned & poorly executed by the IBT's freight organizing committee who's director Tyson Johnson reports directly to president Hoffa

Virtue was only a soldier following orders....Follow the chain of command and the buck stops where?...... At Hoffa's desk.... But like they said, he was out of town.

It was done because the IBT's organizing committee was trying to put pressure on USF to not block the Teamsters attempt to organize USF Dugan.

If brother Hoffa HAD been in town maybe he would have suggested that freight director Johnson & his organizing committee rethink their plan & stage the strike at USF's highly profitable USF Holland rather than their weakest link.. USF Red Star which had just turned the corner & had returned to making a profit again.

I don't know about planet alignment but USF shut down Red Star because of the one day strike & then expanded Holland into Red Star's area with the IBT's permission.

Then Yellow bought USF & shut down USF Dugan.

Its strange how things happen. I wonder how different things would be today if president Hoffa had not been out of town working on other business back in may 2004.....

Maybe someday someone will write a book & devote a chapter or two on Hoffa's role in the growth of YRC & UPS.

I remember that CFer but I also remember the part time issue that was struck over was a joke also. It was not over just part time help it was something particular to do with them. Although I do not remember the detailes about the part time issue. But I do remember very well us on the line talking about it....How the issue that I forget now was a joke to put us on the picket line. Does anyone remember the detailes about the part time issue???

In 1997, that was one of the UPS proposals that was on the table - to pull out of the Temaster funds and go with a UPS fund. Pretty much told them where to stick it.

If I remember right, in 2002, UPS was pretty much told to not even bring it to the table.

Part of the problem too in both 1997 and 2002 was so many part time workers working full time hours, but only receiveing part time benefits. The creations of 10.000 new full time jobs from each contract helped cut down on that.

Good point DS. All that $750 did was buy yes votes from guys that had been without paychecks for a few weeks. That $750 was about the equilivent of what our raise would have been and it was a 1 time thing. We'll never make that money up again.

They called it a bonus. A bonus to me is something above and beyond what we usually get. That my friend was no bonus.

Toxic, The only thing I remember is that the companies wanted it and we wanted nothing to do with it.

As far as I'm concerned, companies have part timers through casuals. The only thing they owe these guys is 8 hours pay when they come in. Nothing more.
