You can enter either the zip code into the location box, or the airport code, or click on the airplane icon and choose a location State/Country and then the City. If your city is not listed, pick other and write in where you were. You can even enter a mile marker. It will find the best rate.

Unless you have arest period though, you won't be able to take a meals deduction. You can only take a meals deduction also known as Per Diem for travel away from home. The IRS defines travel away from home as travel away from home involving a rest period.

| | New Tax Lady On-Board to Help Now and During Tax Time
Jeff has graciously let me into the truckingboards inner sanctum. I will answer your questions now and later for free. My office phone is 540-984-4879. On my website rkmstaxservice.com you will find in the IRS update page a number of items that pertain particularly to you. My website is listed in the Advertising section.
Owner/Operators did you place a rig in service in 2008 or 2009. Part of Stimulus Package is giving an additional 50% depreciation plus you still get the standard. That is a lot of money to pay taxes on if your tax person does catch it.
Mileage rates from Jan - Jun are set at 50.5 cents a mile
Jul - Dec are set at 58.5 cents a mile
Keep track of your actuals as that may be the way to go this year.
You know those other commercial companies that do the fast refunds well I'm not commercial but I can do the Refund Anticipation Loans (24-48 hours in your account, Instant Loans (35 sec on-site visits only), and the slower but not as slow as the IRS 8-10 days.
My husband drives for PRIME he just started this year and I'm offering a lot of free services just to fill the void. I retired from the Federal Government in 1996 where I was classifed as a Management Analyst, Budget Analyst, Computer Specialist, Information Management Officer and worked with all branchs during Desert Storm fine tuning the Passport/Visa system interface with State Department, Army, Navy, Marines. I managed a Liberty Tax office for 2 years and decided if I had to do the training, fix others mistakes I might as well get the profit. I am on my 6th year now and my rates for 2007 tax returns were $160 for Federal and $35 for State. The bank fees are extra and depends on your refund amount. My husband says they are too low but I'm comfortable with them.
I can give you references from drivers on a case by case basis I'm not going to post their cell phone numbers.
I do a lot of extras that come up in the year normally for free and questions are always free.

| | I got a question for you. My daughter who is 17 and a sophmore in high school. She had a baby in March of last year. My wife and I are taking care of the baby so our daughter can stay in school to get her education. Our daughter is going to give us legal custody of the baby basically to be able to get her on my insurance plan. We are awaiting a court date to get this accomplished. The baby's idiot father, (also 17) has been paying child support of 50 dollars a week since October. My wife and I have been supplying all her needs other than that. My question is can I claim her on my income taxes for last year? I know there wont be any question when we are granted custody. Thanks in advance. |

The answer is yes - but you will need a form 8332 signed by the custodial parent that must be sent to the IRS along with your tax return that gives you the right to claim the child. The only problem you might have is if the (idiot) claims the child on his tax return. Normally it is the custodial parent that has the right to the child, if there is no understanding and he claims the child before you file electronically, then you need to file by paper and attach documentation to the 8332 that shows the mother and child at your address ie., doctor bills, birth certificate, social security card. Then if the IRS has paid the young man - they will take it away from him, give it to you and send him a bill.
