Most commercial tax services - hire off the street - give them 3 weeks of training and call them tax professionals. How do I know I micro managed a Liberty Tax office for 2 years, they are paid on a minimum wage hourly rate, some branchs give them a percentage of the total tax preparation fee. They are more interested in getting as much money out of you that they can. But the truth be told unless you get a seasoned person they know how to read a screen and ask you the questions that the software wants. You have to get someone who asks questions. If you go somewhere and they ask for your w2's and don't ask you any other questions ask for someone who has been doing taxes longer than 6 weeks.
Turbo tax is good but you would be surprised what a tax prof can help you, most of the time the money you pay them is more than made up with the other LEGAL deductions that get you back a refund.
I had a client come in an asked me to look over their business return, they had them done elsewhere and were upset that they weren't getting very much back and some of their deductions had been left off. They were supposedly only getting $1800 back. By the time we got through the process and picked up the missed deductions and found a lot of other business expenses. They got a refund check for $9,870. My fee was $195. I could say I'm worth the $195.
If H&R did you wrong you can file an amendment for years 2005, 2006.
