Only for those who don't make it back to the barn. If you can show on your logs that you didn't make it home that day you can get that money. If you are like me and throw those logs away every month make sure you have a reciept of and out of town purchase that day. I use a debit card and hit a micky d's or a bk. It may be a 6 dollar purchase that could save me thousands on an audit one day.
Thanks mildew. I think I'll just hang on to the log books. I'm terrible about saving receipts.
I need the long form for a tax write-off. Correct? Then just go thru the logs and count up the days that I was out of town? Right?
....yea or give a close guestimate. Don't sell yourself short. Uncle sam gets enough of our cash. I use a cpa that deals with truck drivers. She has everything on the computer screen. I give her all my info and she types in and 10 minutes later it's a done deal
Another odd fact is that you can only claim a 1/2 day for the day you leave out and for the day you return home. Most just claim a whole day for those anyway, and it's never a problem.
This may not affect all the same way, but, per diem lowers your annual gross ,and since, social security and unemployment are calculated on gross there could be a disadvantage for some.
