A tractor-trailer driver who caused a 10-vehicle pileup on Interstate 83 just north of York County last month was sleeping when he crashed, state police said.
Michael Boone, 44, of Baltimore, was the rig driver whose truck crashed into vehicles slowed or stopped for traffic about 7 a.m. July 21 in Lower Allen Township, police said.
"Our preliminary investigation has determined he was asleep at the time of the crash," said Trooper Karl Schmidhamer, a state police spokesman. "Lack of skid marks are a good indication of that. That's our primary finding."
Newberry Township resident Nancy Zarker, 54, of Ridge Road, was killed in the chain-reaction crash, police said. Boone and six others were taken to area hospital for treatment of injuries, police said.
At this point, no charges have been filed against Boone, Schmidhamer said.
"We're still working on the (accident) reconstruction," he said. "Then we'll have to (confer with) the district attorney's office in Cumberland County as to whether we're going to file any charges or not."
Police said Boone's truck drove over Zarker's SUV. The crash closed the northbound lanes of I-83 for about six hours, police said.
