On only the second day of its service, the township commissioners are pleased with the revamped traffic signal system at Freeport and Crawford Run roads.
The new system is geared with sensors that can determine traffic patterns and adjust the lights accordingly. The goal is to eliminate the bottlenecks that occur at rush hour with motorists exiting the Route 28 expressway. In the evenings, or at times when Crawford Run Road traffic is light, a constant green light will be evident along Freeport Road.
"I think we can thank three people for this: Gov. (Ed) Rendell, state Sen. Sean Logan and state Rep. Frank Dermody," said commissioners chairman Anthony Taliani. "It all started on a Friday last year during Lent when we (those three and Taliani) were eating at the Holy Family Church and began talking about the traffic problems."
The signal system, which cost about $125,000, was paid for with state grants as were the design and engineering study for the intersection.
