The cameras are part of a $13 million intelligent transportation system PennDot is building. The system is designed to alert PennDot of traffic accidents or slow downs on area highways. When completed, 46 traffic cameras will provide live video to a Traffic Information Center at PennDot District 8 headquarters in Susquehanna Township. The video images will also be available on the Internet.
Along with the cameras, programmable signs and radio stations will alert drivers to any conditions that would be a hazard or a slow down to traffic. Currently 21 highway cameras are active. 21 other cameras are expected to come on-line this year. The final cluster will be developed next year in the Gettysburg area.
