Bill Sigler of Frederick County knew it was time to consider changing how he commutes to his job in Northern Virginia when he added up his gas bills earlier this month.
For the first 11 days of May Sigler and wife, Susan, spent more than $400 filling up their tanks.
Although Sigler and his wife draw good salaries — he’s a manager for the Department of Homeland Security and she’s a program manager for Fairfax County government — they were surprised when they totaled their fuel expenses.
Sigler has been driving his Volvo S40 to Washington, D.C., four days a week. His wife drives a minivan to Fairfax at least three days a week.
His wife must continue to drive on her own because she works odd hours. But Sigler has gone online to investigate carpooling and vanpooling options.
Sigler likes driving his car, but he’d be willing to take passengers.
"I have three empty seats in my car," said Sigler, who carpooled when he lived in Fredericksburg before moving to Winchester in February 2007.
