When GE Trailer Fleet Services began opening regional "showrooms" late last year to get its 48- and 53-foot trailers closer to owner-operators and cartage companies, the company knew it was taking a gamble.
The business, after all, was in the midst of the worst trucking economy in years.
But for the Wayne, Pa.-based leasing and trailer reseller, the gamble has paid off. Even with trucking demand still soft and big companies slimming down fleets, small truckers riding out the economic storm have been keeping the used equipment business hot for GE and others.
"This market seems to be unaffected," said GE spokesman Patrick Brennan.
