Michael Dresser's article "Road Block?" (July 31) accurately framed the growing challenge of funding transportation infrastructure. The current ebbing of state revenue for transportation projects is just the beginning of a downward funding spiral. As Mr. Dresser notes, Marylanders are driving less, turning to alternative transportation modes and using more fuel-efficient vehicles. These are not necessarily bad trends. But because Maryland's transportation funding structure is linked to revenue sources that are based on miles driven, as well as on the amount and size of vehicles sold, all of which are diminishing, state transportation revenue is down and will continue to fall.
