The chairman of a committee advising the General Assembly on transportation challenged members today to come up with a plan that will raise $10 billion for the state over the next 10 years. Such a plan would likely mean higher taxes and a shift away from the gas tax. Every option is on the table, Brad Wilson said: Taxes based on miles driven, a higher sales tax on cars, turning interstates into toll roads, local sales taxes for rail projects, borrowing via bonds, and lobbying for a greater share of federal money.
