Post (Maine) Turnpike puts off widening project on lower traffic forecast

Maine Turnpike Authority's ten year plan forecasts much slower growth in traffic, and as a result a widening project through the western edge of the Portland area is being deferred at least five years. Traffic on the Maine Turnpike grew steadily from around 100k/day in 1990 to an average 170k/day in 2004 and remained at about that level through 2007.

on any saturday in the summer, traffic backs up from the massachusetts line where 495 dumps in to 95 all the way up to portland.

a little more than 50 miles.

sometimes it backs up both ways.

going southbound, you're better off getting off at wells and taking route 9 to spaulding turnpike and then into nh.

used to a lot worser <new word, when it was only 2 lanes each way from kittery to portland.

coming out of PME on 8 with mty's via'ing into BOS or PVD really sucked on a saturday in the summer.
