MOUNT VERNON — The Ohio State Highway Patrol recently conducted a concentrated enforcement operation on commercial vehicles, stopping nearly 1,500 vehicles and taking 197 trucks or drivers out of service.
The patrol looked for violations which included speeding, careless driving, equipment violations, improper driver qualifications, improper hazardous material transportation, oversized/overweight vehicles and hours of service violations.
“It could be anything from bad tires to brakes that are out of adjustment, any number of mechanical issues with the vehicle,” said Patrol Sgt. Jon Payer. “When a vehicle is placed out of service, the driver is not allowed to move it until it is repaired.”
In addition to vehicle safety regulations, federal rules also seek to prevent truck-driver fatigue by controlling the number of consecutive hours drivers can spend behind the wheel without stopping to rest.
