San Antonio truck stop sees fourth death Quote:
The body of a man in his 50s was found inside the cab of a parked flatbed 18-wheeler at a truck stop on the Southeast Side on Monday, the fourth body found at area truck stops in the past month.
The man's body was too decomposed for police to immediately determine the cause of death. The Bexar County medical examiner is to perform an autopsy today.
Trucker Alex Grigsby said he pulled into the Flying J Travel Plaza in the 1800 block of Foster Road around 3 p.m. and smelled an overwhelmingly foul odor when he got out of his cab.
"I didn't think anything of it," Grigsby said. "But when I came back, it really stunk in the back, and I saw a bunch of flies in the truck. And then I saw dried blood on the fuel tank."
Grigsby called the police.
Lowry said the truck was reported stolen by the trucking company, Watkins Trucking Co., because the truck driver never made it to his destination.
Officials could not be reached late Monday at the headquarters in Birmingham, Ala., for Watkins, a long-haul interstate trucking company with general and specialized freight including sheet metal, lumber and logs.
The man had been dead at least four or five days, Lowry said. About four prescription pill bottles were found in the cab, but he said he didn't know what kind of pills they are.
Truckers at the scene questioned how a truck could go unnoticed for so long, pointing out that companies can track them through geographic positioning systems or credit cards.
"They know where he picked up his load and they know his destination," said Michael, a trucker at the Flying J who didn't want his last name used. "And they probably know what route he was going to take. Something isn't right."
| The news article does go on to say..... Quote:
On Nov. 1, police found the bodies of Harry Edward Ackroyd and Michelle McLean in a big rig outside the Petro Stopping Center. On Nov. 23, the body of Byron Gonzales was discovered in a rig also at the same location, which is a mile east of where the man's body was found Monday.
But police Sgt. William Lowrysaid he could not draw a connection between the deaths.
