Default Hershey Moving to Mexico

"Hershey's Chocolate Is Moving Some Operations from the U.S. to Mexico-Truth!

Summary of the eRumor:
The eRumor laments that the American Hershey company that makes Hershey chocolate products is moving to Mexico.

The Truth:
There is a significant move by Hershey from the United States to Mexico in what the company calls a "global supply-chain transformation." Not all the operations are making the move but according to a June, 2007 article in the Los Angeles Times about 3,000 of the company's 13,000 employees will be cut.

About 900 workers are to lose their jobs in the company's home town of Hershey, Pennsylvania and the Hershey plant in Oakdale, California, is closing down. Operations there are being moved to Monterrey, Mexico.

The times quotes Hershey CEO Richard Lenny as saying that labor costs in Mexico are 10 percent less than in the U.S. and that by 2010 the changes will save shareholders $190 million."

I don't know about anyone else, but I am very particular about where & what I eat. Even without a boycott, I wouldn't buy or eat any foods made in a 3rd world country.

Unfortunately we are creatures of habit and most people will continue on without any change at all.

this is nothing new. as long as the cost of labor is cheap, as long as the cost of energy is cheap, companies will continue to move out of this country. we can never stop this. there is NO reason why we need to pay over $3.00 for a gallon of gasoline, or over $3.00 for a gallon of home heating oil. not to mention the costs of diesel, electricity, etc, etc. the way to "get back" at these companies is to whack them hard in transportation costs, but this too will be passed onto the consumer. boycotts will only shut the factory down probably for good, if a sustained boycott were to be implemented, but this i doubt will happen, as a large amount of american's eat chocolate, and let's not forget, that Hersey Company produces chocolate candies under several names, not just the Hersey name..............

so Hersey, WILL survive any boycott, or even extremely high transportation costs....
