| | Yellow/Conway Dilemma
here's the deal guys. when i put my application in at conway, i also put an application in at yellow which is right next door to conway in raleigh/durham. well, while i was waiting for the decision to be made by conway, yellow called and i went in and had an interview and took the drug test. i'm waiting on the drug test now. of course it's part-time work on the dock to start. yellow said they would need me to work on friday night and sunday afternoon. well, the tm at yellow told me that if i get the job at conway that they (conway) might have a problem with me working part-time at yellow. union vs. non-union. so, i start at conway wednesday morning and i'm going to tell them that i have the opportunity to pick up extra hours at yellow on the weekend. has anyone encountered this problem before? the tm at yellow told me that guys used to work at 2 or 3 different terminals/companies to make a little more money. will conway have a problem with this situation? if they do, is there any way that my job could be in jeopardy? i didn't read anything in the paperwork that said i could not work for a union company part-time while i work for conway. anyone have any opinions?

Conway might very well have a problem with you working at Yellow. I would think that they wouldn't want you to know how much better you'll be treated at a Teamster Company. I'd go to Yellow and try to work extra at another Teamster Company. In the longrun, you'll be much better off. Since Conway is a very anti-Union Company they could fire you for this or any other reason they wanted to. I'm not saying that they will fire you, or that they'll have a major problem with you working at Yellow too, I'm just saying from what I know about them I wouldn't put it past them. Choose very carefully and best of luck.

Not because I am a Teamster but in the long run, you will be better off at Yellow.

We had a supervisor that quit RDWY and went to OVNT and needed some help on the OB night shift there. He pulled all the strings he could and couldn't get us hired. They wouldn't even look at us. DS.

ConWay will not want you working for a competitor. It has nothing to do whether it is a union outfit or not. Do you need a full or a part time job? If you can live on part time hours, by all means go to Yellow.

I am not a union guy and I am not going to slant this one way or the other.
First if neither company can gaurantee you full time hours, you do not owe either an explanation as to what you do to put food on your table.
If one offers you enough hours then give yourself to them and try and make it work. For people to say that a union carrier will treat you better is hogwash. You have more protection, but the hours are much more sporadic especially during lean times and the work environment is more divided between the managers and the labor.
If you tell Conway, they very well, may not hire you. That is their perrogative. As a casual on the dock at Yellow, there is no gaurantee there as well, until you get in the union. Before you get your days in they can let you go or just never call you, if they do not like you.
So there is no easy answer here. Go with your gut and try to commit to the one that gives you a better feeling of a long term commitment.
Good luck
