Two years ago I bought the cheapest Garmin Nuvi available. About 100 bucks on clearance I believe. It has been a great help to me in city P&D but you CAN NOT just let it route you. You will still need to use your experience and knowledge to choose the best route. I use it for locating addresses and especially for telling me which side of the street it is on so I can spend more time watching the road and less time squinting at buildings looking for hidden numbers. Most of the time I don't even have it set to a destination. In this mode it will list the upcoming street at the top of the screen, very useful for planning my turn, ie. taking up the whole road to turn a 53 footer into a place that should only get city boxes.
I love mine and I am sure someday they will be outlawed.

I bought a Garmin 760 a while back. Its a good device. They are always coming out with map updates. I don't think any GPS can be completely relied on. You have to use good judgement on your own.

PM me if you need any Garmin updates or you want to activate the traffic reciever.

I try not to let mine drive me, but when I am in a town delivering that I don't know that well...well I do what I got to do and alot of times I find myself turning around alot. I don't think they will ever be outlawed but I could see maybe a law that puts truck routes in all gps devices. I see a lot of BIG TRUCKS going ways they shouldn't be. I am really interested in the Rand McNally version I'm hoping that someone else has one and can tell me if it is worth it. Otherwise I just may go with the Garmin.

delorme earthmate gps lt-40 with street atlas usa 2010 - eBay (item 270483481181 end time Nov-20-09 20:44:07 PST)

i've been using one for over 10 years.

during the summer when wifey and i rent a party barge on the lake, i take it with me and with a depth finder. i never have to worry about running aground or getting lost because all the coves look alike on my lake.

small gps units are for people who are happy with having a little toy on their dashboard that scolds them when they screw up.

if you got the room to set it up, laptop/gps turns you into a navigator.

I got the ATT Nav on my iphone. It updates and gives accident and weather reports.
It's mounts also on my windshield. It works good for me.

Also I can view weather cams on the highway for road conditions. The best thing I've bought.

It dies tell you about low clearances, Hazmat routes, and most "no truck" routes.

That being said you can not let it drive the truck, if you do you will get into trouble eventually. If I was not laid off I wouldn't see a reason for linehaul guys to have them, but they might be helpful in the city. It's kinda pricy....$500. Online updates are free.
I am using a Co-Piot 11, which I have in my laptop. It is very good about routings and such, but as pullin' said, it is up to you.
It retails for $300, got it for $200 on the internets thingy. It has saved me numerous times from going on restricted roads, more detailed directions to shippers/receivers, etc. I highly recommend it.
