FedEx Freight | ELD's/legal challenge/real world at FxF

That's what mine is doing and it might be twenty miles to find a area to pull off and go back to driving status. I kind of blame the company on this. There not ever happy to just take something out of the box and have it work like it's supposed to. They always have to tinker with it and we endure the problems it creates.
They took the "skip" feature out of ours. We really don't have to log back on duty after our 30 is up. Just start driving and it'll change it for you a couple miles down the road.

Not sure this "automatic" feature would work here, as we can receive corrective action for exceeding a 30 min lunch break by more than 3 minutes. Seems to me there must be a way to end any "other activity" at a specific minute, in order to comply with Company policy.

We were told to go on lunch on the Intermec then off duty on the ELD. When your 30 min's are up, depart lunch on handheld, wait a min then go back to on duty or driving. The people net techs said the ELD should automatically up date duty status but too do it this way. It's been 3 months and none of our guys are having any compliance issues.

We are able to change duty status when we need to. You just can't do it while the tractor is in motion.

Originally the ELD would communicate with the handheld, we were told that there were problems with lunch violations because of this so fedex had people net reprogram so we had to enter off duty manually, go on lunch, then back on duty manually when lunch was over. ELD switches from on duty to driving after 1 mile, (used to be 3) so if you ride around looking for your hooks you may have to tap the ignore option but once you start driving it switchs automatically.

At OD we're required to carry paper logs just in case. In six years of using PeopleNet the dispatch function has failed a number of times but the Elogs have been 100% reliable.
I believe that DOT requires a driver to carry backup paper logs. If you get caught without paper backup, that's a ticket.

Seems this weekend they did a reprogram to the elog. While hooking up it never gave the skip mode at all but kept throwing me into driving mode.
If it's going to do that then set it for 35 mph. That's the minimum road speed other than a school zone.
I guess this is a new toy for the hire ups to keep screwing with and it will bite them later.

How fast are you driving in the yard? Does it put you onto driving right of the bat or are you on "on duty not driving" to start then it puts you onto driving while in the yard?

Going less than 15 mph, soon as I left parking spot to the dolly pool it put me driving from on duty, changed it drove to dispatch it put me back driving, changed it back, while hooking up went back to driving. Had a total of 11 minutes driving but it only showed going 1.6 miles

Definitely something wrong. Time to put it in the shop for 2 or 3 weeks!! :hilarious:

You must also have a copy of the instructions on how to operate the system.
You must also be able to download your logs if asked to.
Not being able to provide these things will get you a ticket.

It will be interesting how the numbers people will deal with something they have no control over.

I like them, no issues so far, haven't had to swap with a tractor that doesn't have the tablet so far, swapping out tractors is easy tho. Saves time and you don't have to fill out 7 days worth after vacation.

Does FedEx require you guys to fill out an off duty log for each consecutive day off? Legally you can put an entire month on one log sheet if you didn't work.
