FedEx Freight | FedEX freight sliding sideways down I-80 with police escort

This video is a classic example of bad journalism. It creates more questions than it answers. Was chain control in effect? Was the driver chained up? Was there a mechanical issue that explains the jack knife? Was there a reason the lights on the back box aren't on? Was the driver ticketed?

I'll stand back because now RC and his buddies in Sacramento will attack me with unsubstantiated claims about how the driver is a hero, yet the company won't be able to defend itself with a report from the CHP.

I just can't understand under the conditions he wasn't changed. I live in Sac and you are right about chain controls and other factors. I know if chain signs are up and the driver don't chain it's a pretty big fine. But all in all the driver wasn't a rookie for sure...

The comment section says he was cited for no tag on the rear

If I were to guess. ... I'd say the red air line was off on the rear trailer causing the breaks to look up. Would also explains no lights.

Then they didn't want to write him for not chaining or the chain enforcement wasn't on ... Good deal! I bet he was chained before he left there...

Wow, chains or no chains, I say a job well done. Almost certainly, that rear pup was very light or empty. Can't quite see the pigtail to explain the lights :poke:, but I don't see any damage, on this side.

Good point, Stimpy. That would explain the continuous drag marks left by the rear pup. The brakes never released, as I would have expected.

After reading the article and then watching the video, first I'll say this was no rookie driving!! Second, the article says the truck was originally jackknifed and instead of closing the road and waiting on a wrecker, since the truck still had power they elected to let the driver attempt to pull it out of the way. Third, it's "possible" that during the jackknife the emergency line, the service line, and the electrical cord were all snapped from the dolly to the rear trailer which would've resulted in no lights and continued brakes on the rear. It's also "possible" that all we're working before the jackknife occurred. Whether he was chained, should've been chained, etc, could have possibly prevented the jackknife in the first place, who knows, but...there's no excuse for the missing tag!! A good pretrip should've either caught the missing tag OR saw that the tag was close to falling off and a trip through the shop could've prevent the citation.

On another note, kudos to the CHP for letting the driver attempt to clear the roadway himself!! Often times the HP (in most states) overreact to the situation and cause havoc for other motorist trying to utilize the highway.

All very good points. I guess they might of tried to let him pull to the shoulder and that all occurred trying to get to the shoulder. Since he got stopped probably was a good call. But if it would of ended differently, I wouldn't of wanted to be the one that called it. I didn't see chains on the rear box? Maybe the road conditions worsened after the jack knife took place. It don't take long up there. But judging from what I saw the driver did good controlling the situation from the point I saw it.

I believe the driver just wanted to check his lights on the rear trailer and didn't want to get out of the tractor in such bad weather. Lol

Reading both comments from Truckee CHP and from his mother on FB,
He jack knifed avoiding an accident at the top of the hill.
RC refrains from commenting on whether or not he was chained up, as RC was not there, unlike several of you from your comments.
