SAIA | DriveCam ... By Lytx

Having poor morale and high turnover in a well established company is one thing, but having those problems in a company that is not fully established and trying like hell to grow exponentially is a HUGE problem. OD understood that, Saia doesn't seem to.
I'm hopeful we can make some adjustments that will boost morale and keep the turnover from skyrocketing.

So what are some good procedures/policies/activities that Saia could execute in order to make morale better?

The cameras are never going away, but maybe the company could do something to make their use and implementation more palatable?

Suggestions? Thoughts?

The bluetooth (cell phone) policy and CB radio policy would be a huge start. The setting to keep a 6-7 second following distance is nearly impossible especially in a big city.

I feel like I need to thank Saia for putting the cameras in. It made me start looking around and I found an opportunity I can not pass up. So, in a few months if everything goes well I will be leaving. If Saia didn't put the cameras in I would not have been looking so thanks Rick.

I think we fixing 2 be humping hard pretty soon. I might go back and hop in system and rack up.
Rack it up Rider and "get paid" ... You need to come off that easy bid and hit the system. You know that's where the money is. I saw that new truck of yours in the parking lot so I know you have some hefty payments. I say go for it and "get paid" .... LOL!! You will hit 100K in 2017 Rider. I feel it in my bones.

LOL u right about them payments.

I've adjusted to it as well, and have figured out that about 90% of camera events can be prevented by continuously turning off the lane departure system. That's easy for me because I did that anyway before the cameras even came around.

They still don't even have a majority of the trucks fitted with cameras yet, and just look at the :::shit::: storm it's already causing. It's going to get very bad here in the next couple months, I think. The sad thing is, they could reverse the Bluetooth/CB policy and put a stop to a majority of the bad blood right then and there, but unfortunately it seems that any kind of common sense is lost on managment at this point. I think they will run the ship aground before ever admitting that they could have possibly been wrong about any of this.
You guys can't talk on phone via Bluetooth or on CB?

No cell phones, No CB radio and NO bluetooth! No fiddling with our phone and NO looking down to grab some food or drink. What some of us have been doing for years safely, is now off limits. Two hands on the wheel and eyes on the road, boy

Wow.

It's not that bad I've been in a new truck for 3 weeks I eat drink talk on the phone talk on the cb and check in on my lineup from time to time I've even replied to a text or two. As of yesterday no videos have came back. Just stay away from people and use your head. Although I'm pretty sure I did get a video Friday morning when a taxicab cut me off and I pretty much had to lock it up because he almost came into the side of me it was also pouring the rain so that didn't help either.

Most of the responses are just drama in regards to the cameras. They are not that damn bad. From not letting the radar reset to the lane departure button most find that things are very workable. I've got this system down pat and I go by the book. I rarely get a trigger and I'm in P&D with city traffic all day. I won't let a 60-70K day city job go because of these cameras. I will stay until I'm ready to retire or they decide they want me gone. Either way I'm good.

If your drive the same tractor everyday its easy to figure out what will set them off. I have driven some that are very easily set-off, other ones you can jump the tracks going in HST yard and not get a video. :shift:

The Freightliners are the worst. The retrofitted tractors aren't near as bad. Even the craters in the Garland yard won't set many of them off.

Bottom line for most of us is going to be whether or not they wise up and get rid of the no Bluetooth and no CB policy. Virtually every other LTL lets drivers use these tools, so if they won't use their heads we'll go elsewhere. Still a shame that the pencil pushers have taken a great career and turned it into just another job.

Gave it a chance at Con-Way and all it did was open the door to even more micromanagement and ridiculousness than there was before.

You seriously need to put the Saia kool-aid down, dude. You're starting to remind me of Beerfd from the old Con-Way board.

Not altogether true. I'm no fan of the camera in my face, but I've learned to deal with it, I've learned in some instances how to keep from setting it off, but I digress. I know of a personal experience another driver at my SIC had where he was able to head off a lawsuit just by telling the four wheeler that hit him, that it was all on tape. I am unsure as to how much the cameras have saved the company in settlement payouts, but I'm guessing they have already paid for themselves. And in the end, I'll deal with the camera if the company gets to keep more of it's own money.
