Retirement....The Job I Was Born To Have!

Anyone know if ABF has quietly discontinued one of it's long-standing traditions of giving a limited-edition set of collectible ABF doubles to retirees?

The last guy who retired at our terminal was given his set on the day he retired three years ago. I've been retired for more than a month, and haven't gotten mine. When I asked our TM, he said: "Yes, you'll get it...." , and then 10 minutes later, he said he wasn't sure......

I haven't been able to get a straight answer out of him, because he claims he can't find out from anyone when I'll get the retirement doubles.

Such a little thing,......but indicative of the downward spiral of morale..........They beat the daylights out of you, ask the older guys to take on more and more,......because "You know how to do it so much better/faster than our newer employees"......Push you to work longer hours because their pay/vacation fiasco in the last contract dried up their stream of new-hires,.........And, ...you do it all, because of some archaic sense of a work ethic.......

And,......like the proverbial gold(plated) watch that companies used to give out as a minor "tip"......to give a slight wink to the fact that you busted your butt for the company,.......... That..."tip"....the doubles,....apparently has gone the way of the gold watch.......

Maybe I'm mistaken,.....maybe it's an internal thing with my TM,......But I can't ask this question on InfoRoundtable, because on the day I retired, they changed the format for me, and I can no longer access many of the pages that I could when I was an active employee,......including InfoRoundtable. They were pretty quick on that..........

Anyone have any idea whether there is,...or isn't retirement doubles anymore?

I believe that the answer is..."Yes, it has been done". Ever since Penn Joy (I think it was) went out of business they have been junk anyway like the safety awards that they had been giving out for the ten years before they switched to points at the company store.

The last set that I saw was ummm five years ago or so and one of the mirrors was broken off of it. I laughed and told the guy he had to have more than ten years with the company to get one with both of the mirrors on it (he came from a defunct freight company).

Canary ,it takes about two months to process after you sign your paper work, I just retired last Dec & I got mine in Feb. The units are pretty well made however you do want to check it out b-4 you leave the terminal to make sure the #'s match the unit and that there's nothing broken(I had no problems) good luck.

Why, thank you,.......I'll wait them out, I guess...
But that still leaves Bro. Cropduster going on 18 months without a peep from the company......
I hope he didn't slip through the cracks....
Maybe when he finally gets his set, it will have the old-style logos on it ,........making it worth much more than the new sets.....

Canary, After a little research I found the problem with your wagons, they were ordered with two stroke Detroit engine
Oil leaks were so bad, the box became saturated, ABF says boxes are on back order.
Hope you get them soon, I'll race you with my PIE wagons.

A few years ago a retired employee had a picture of vintage ABF rig with a two stroke Detroit hanging in his living room.. His wife made him take it down when it leaked oil on the carpet.

Not good thinking on her part, she could drain the carpet and have a free oil change for her car.

You have to have at least 10 years with the company to get the truck, otherwise you only get the "years of service" retiree plaque. If cropduster had the years of service, he needs to contact his branch manager or HR dept.

Come on Canary. You should know better. Giving employees something for free, even though it might help morale, affects the bottom line. Hence less for the geniuses at the top running (ruining) the company
Employees? Don't you mean 'former' employees? Giving anything to a former employee would really be money down the drain.

Thanks for that info. Only my last 5 yrs were with ABF and 3 yrs in between the red star/Holland fiasco.
Still didn't get a plaque though.
Not really missing it because I did finish out my sentance there. Lol

yes. they dont hand them out anymore. they fedex them to your home. we had 3 just reitre this past week

Pennzoil, it depends on how you sign off on your paper work , when you quit to retire, you can have it sent to wherever you want. If you sign off early with your retirement date, they will have it on your last date of employment. However, if you sign the paperwork on your last day of work you can choose were you want it sent and you will have to wait for it. We had 6 guy's out of my barn retire and I have seen it go both way's, research
has got to be done, and you have to handle things accordingly,

I finally got a response from a Ms. Barthol at ABF's HR Dept. who sent me an attachment with ABF's Retiree Recognition program. Exactly what Bro. Delta Dude said. Under 10 years, you get a plaque,.........over 10 years, you get the plaque and a set of retirement doubles.

It also said that paperwork processing should start at least two months prior to retirement. My former TM is new to managing, .....I guess he wasn't quite up to speed as I was the first retiree he ever processed.

He'll get a lot of practice, because we just had another one plan for the end of this month,......and two more guys will go before the end of this year. Four guys in a 10 man terminal in one year..........and three more left over 55.......

Nice to know, though that they didn't discontinue the program.......Like I said, it's a little thing,.....but little things are what makes for good morale sometimes.......

Thank you for that! I'll bet that sonofagun is solid cast iron,....judging by the looks,....

Yeah,.....back when they made toys to actually be played with for several generations.........

I had 5 brothers,.....and I could remember getting belted in the forehead with one of those heavy-duty trailers,........kingpin side down.
Left a distinct dent in my forehead. I can firmly attest to the strength and durability of those old toys........
