Holland | This equipment is just horrible and getting worse

With the shape of this equipment, how much longer?seems they don't want to fix anything, just a thought
It's funny everything I write up on my Volvo gets fixed. Sometimes I might have to send it back a second time but it always gets fixed. Usually the guys who bitch about things not getting fixed are the ones who don't write up what is wrong in the DVIR book or worse yet don't even walk around their truck when they are done for the day. I guess if I had to bitch about something it would be the length of time it takes at the shop is a little longer than it should be. I can't figure out why there is so much bitching about the equipment, yes it was badly neglected for a number of years, but they have bought new trucks three years in a row and we are still suppose to get a couple hundred more in the next couple months. When I walk out of terminals it gets easier every year to spot my orange Volvo because almost all of the trucks lined up to go out at night are less than three year old all white Freightliners. Yes some of the trailers are pretty rough but they have been getting more and more newer trailers also. Considering how many years there was no new equipment purchased, I think they have done a pretty good job the last three years to get us pointed in the right direction.

Quick, someone give this man a application. For Equipment Fleet Manager, he will fit right in.

When I worked there a few years ago, unless it was an obvious flat or a light, one of 3 things would happen. 1- Repairs not necessary. 2- Repair at home terminal (my home terminal had no shop). 3- My repair request was completely ignored or the dvir book was thrown away or "lost" during the day and I'd receive a new one with no documentation of the write up.

Speaking from my experience at the Detroit terminal only here, and I only have to get trailers dealt with (my tractor is my problem) but I've never had trouble getting something fixed that needed fixing on a trailer I was assigned to take over the border.

In fact, I'd pull a Holland trailer over some of the stuff Speedy's still using from like 1998. Bogeys that don't slide, rusty wheels, rusty rivets, beat up barn doors and hardware store tail lights? They're mechanically sound, don't get me wrong, but they look like junk and the DOT doesn't like that.

Detroit, Indianapolis and other Holland-staffed shops are great for the most part. Other terminals like Atlanta or Columbus that use vendors may as well not have a maintenance program at all.

As Frootloop said, I've lost track of how many write ups I've made that weren't even looked at.

"Repair at next PM" is a usual response if the write up does get looked at.

Just seeing the two names next to each other makes me sick.:9529:

Couldn't agree more!!!!!!!

Kept hearing about the some 400 18s with twin screw drives that were coming at the start of July.

Instead the 25s and 26s are getting the elog computers installed. That tells you those poor things aren't coming off the road anytime soon. As long as the lights work and it's moving freight down the road, that's all that matters.
The 21's at our barn got those installed as well.. I joked with the guy putting it on mine asking him if he has extra duct tape to keep the dash together long enough to find a decent spot to mount it.. the radio holder is already on the floorboard even after an additional metal plate was added.

It's only a matter of time till one of these ticking time bombs has some kind of failure causing a fatality.. we can only inspect so much and so can the mechanics, but the years, stress, age, lack of proper maintenance has taken a toll. I think the rust holds this thing together to tell you the truth.

Had to take a truck up to company shop on my bid. The next night the truck they gave me to drive back home was in alot worse repair. Carbon deoxide in cab so bad I had to leave windows down all night. Had a good buzz by the time I figured it out.
Common everyday occurance with the old Strerlings in the city now.

PULL your truck into the scale and tell them whats broke & to inspect it and tell them to only licensed for 72-K ! Only way to get it fixed is to get the DOT involved !
Been there, done that, with more than 1 company. Amazing how safe your truck is after they actually fix it. And here they keep telling me they are broke. Yea, right. von.

Many city units are being plated even less. 56k for a sterling while they continue to set loads 27k and up in the box...
The sterlings empty with a 53' is somewhere around 29k and it is not uncommon to get the loads over weight coming out of the terminal, but when you point it out they get upset... it's a roulette game they are willing to play.

Most of the internationals are tagged for 56k.

Seems like they did that when all the 17s came in thinking the corn binders could retire to the city and then quickly realized they screwed up, lol.

They like to play the average's of actually getting pinched for overweight. It puts us at risk.

You want to make sure what you tell them that is not working, is not a DOT violation that you knowingly drove it out of the yard with...You just became liable too when you left company property with an unsafe unit. Especially if you signed your pretrip inspection form...if you are involved in an accident because of your failure to dead line it,telling them in court the company told you to take it will not stand.

Crazy to see a 507/537 do that though. But even those have to have 2 million miles on them.
It's pics of a set that came into the yard from a line haul accident.. I tried to get more of the pics to load ... They will have to get out the real big roll of Duct tape to get this back on the road.. the other side is compleatly ripped open and the tractor will head to scrap

on another note we had a guy have one of those yellow 48 series buckle in the middle not long ago..
