SAIA | Dallas? ???

What is the latest news in big D
Well, Dallas/Garland is going about it's business of breaking records in regards to bill counts and overall profitability. D-FW and Houston are the backbone of this company. Although we may not be the biggest city (IE-Chicago) we by far generate the most revenue. From around 1800-2300 outbound bills a day we smoke the rest. And with 80-90 swaps everyday we stay pretty busy. And this is just Garland. Won't go into Dallas at this time. For those that don't know Dallas is in Grand Prairie and Garland is in Dallas. Dallas serves the West such as Fort Worth while Garland serves the East such as Garland. We have two terminals here in the metroplex but we honestly need four just like our major competition has. We need a Fort Worth terminal and a Garland terminal. Old Dominion is building in Garland now. And Southeastern just opened in Garland this past February. FedEx has 4 or 5 in the metroplex I believe. They are on a complete different level. Rumor has it corporate is looking to build in Garland but that's all it is. Not even a rumor for Fort Worth. I think if we could get the operation ratio in the mid to low 80's like Old Dominion we could improve our infrastructure. Anyway, I wont waste anymore of my time on a thread that will just die. Just wanted to give a brief synopsis of the D/FW area. Good day, gentleman.

good news

3PL will be taking a bigger role in overall freight volumes moving forward. Companies are finding it is more economical to use 3PL rather than have a shipping manager be running quotes and chasing down accessorial charges. Makes good financial sense. Saia, and every other LTL better start getting used to this idea.

And what exactly is 3PL?
Third party logistics company.

Essentially, they are paid by shippers to run rates and line up shipping and/or receiving of items. These companies have no exposure or risk, and therefore need no insurance, taxes, etc...

Lots of times they are operating under the umbrella of their parent company from the comfort of their own home.

In many cases, their involvement can streamline the whole shipping process. Sort of eliminates the need for sales people.

Thx BB

It's also only effective for 3+ day freight. 1 and 2 day freight cannot be effectively hauled by 3p carriers. We only use them for 3+ service freight. Thats not the companies focus freight.

If you're looking to build 3 day freight into 1-2
day freight, you go the cheapest route. Hence, 3pl.

We can't even get our 1-2 day freight delivered on time...
Does that include the guaranteed 12 and 5 deliveries? That can't happen in Dallas and Garland because corporate views that as totally unacceptable. Are you saying that is acceptable in Chicago? Not being a smart ass. I'm just curious.

I'm talking about the regular service freight. Guarantee freight still gets there on time for the most part. But it's gotten to the point that unless you buy the guarantee, there's a pretty good chance that the freight isn't going to get there by the service date. I bring home tons of bills every day that are already 1-2 days past due.

Have you first hand knowledge of freight being coded incorrectly to cover for service failure ??

All the time. There's all kinds of that crap that goes on around here. To avoid getting dinged for too many bring-backs, dispatchers will remove them from a city driver's manifest instead of letting the drivers return them in the handheld the proper way. Then they will black them out on the paper delivery manifest so it looks like the bill never went out for delivery.

They also change arrival and departure times in the system for Lowes, Starbucks and other time sensitive deliveries if the driver can't get there in time. They will tell drivers to make those deliveries without arriving themselves on the handheld, then go into the computer and complete the delivery manually using false times to make it look like they were on time.

We had one that would call drivers in too early and then after they sat around on the clock waiting for their loads, he would change their dispatch time to make it look good in the system, but then it looked like the driver took twice as long to get to his first stop.

Not just here, it happens at all terminals too.

Been going on for years, when I was City Driver back around 2006 I would have a couple of stops in the nose of my trailer that would not be manifested unless I could deliver them.....then add them to my manifest so I could clear the delivery in my Nextel.
