FedEx Freight | Layoffs

Sorry Bear... I thought you were with FNL.

I am a Contractor with FNL Linehaul.

I cant really say how much P&D works (if any) on the docks. We have different facilities at the break-bulks.
Linehaul: Drive Only
Hub Drivers: Get Their Route Mi + Hours on the Dock at Hub every night.
Combos: Are combination Freight Handlers / Drivers.

I think to many people have been getting to excited from day one.
Some regions are desperately short of equipment due to the loss of P&D Contractors
We are recycling old equipment from Freight for P&D because their is no way to order new equipment at this time from any manufacture without taking 2008 trucks with the new 2007 EPA Engines.
These engines would cost $7,000 more to purchase, get worse fuel mileage, have higher maintenance cost, and require us to switch over to ULSD fuel that cost $0.10 more per gal.

No problem tightwad, I just get tired of some people telling us how the grass is greener on the other side the only problem they have never been to the other side.

Sure there are some growing pains involved with Watkins but nothing that won’t be worked out in time but to tell us that FedEx bought them to shut them down or that management is going to change everything etc is bull and I think fast tracker and some of the other nay sayers know it they are just trying to start rumors.

I am still a National/Watkins employee. I am not bitter i am just sticking up for myself and my fellow brothers. And for your information i know exactly how YRC operates because i worked for Roadway Express for 6 yrs before coming over to Watkins/National because of a cross country move. End of story. I was told that the benefits would be better after the transition. They are not. The dental and vision sucks. The medical is the same old lousy Aetna. There are no stock options or discounts. If anything the benefits got worse. No more 10K bonus for 25 yrs of safe driving and no more rolex watch on your 20th service anniversary. I keep hearing about how well FedEx treats their employees but i have yet to see anything resembling the latter. I guess the main goal is just to get the OR down to 85% so that Fred can put more Gold Bulion in his vault. I am slowly realizing that FedEx is the WalMart of the trucking industry.

Another issue i forgot to talk about is the load quality. The worst trailers we get and i mean the absolute worst trailers are from DLS-HBG-ATL-SBR with DLS being the worst. Who works at the DLS barn because they rarely if ever use bracing or dunnage in their loads. They should be embarrased to send out trailers like they do.

Thanks for the educated response fastmover. If you are that unhappy might I suggest going back to Roadway it sounds like you would be much happier there?

Well, i would imagine the benefits / discounts will all start coming your way here shortly. The Corporate Discount page is loaded with them - rental cars, hotels, wireless providers, car manufacturers, 75% off of your FedEx shipping (Express / Ground), 30% off anything at FedEx Kinko's - etc etc etc. I've been with Freight for 2 1/2 years and with Custom Critical for 6 months now and i love it. At Freight i worked inbound and / or outbound dock, facilities maintenance and then got my CDL and was a Supplemental Driver for the P&D and Linehaul operations. Only time i was in the truck was when no other city drivers wanted to be - i was never worked in the truck over a full time driver. At Custom Critical - im in the offices now setting up runs and ill be dispatching here in January. This place is a whole other world. We are actually sending more freight every day into the LTL lane's when we run out of trucks across the country. Of course, we are always looking for good Tractor operators who either want to own their own or drive for a fleet - so if you dont like the LTL world and never want to touch a dock or freight - then by all means, come on over - if not - keep your job where you are at and just watch - its all coming around.

I don't understand fm2000 saying that the benefits are not any better. Now we don't pay for long or short term disability. Vision is better then the 50$ that WMl gave you towards your glasses and another 50 towards you eye exam. I have not used the Dental yet. Also now when the health insurance claim gets filled from the Dr's office and goes Aetna iinstead of WMl it gets paid. I can get my EOB on line. As for the discounts I'm waiting too. As the old saying goes Rome wasn't built in a day. Give it time.

What happens at Freight doesnt pertain to National.Maybe National will lay off. The no layoff at Freight stems from American Freightways. National will make more than Freight, and get their old junk equipment paid for sight unseen. There will be some "weeding out" at National for sure.National will get parted out and integrated .We bought Watkins for Canada and thats it.And the slow service that is cheap, called"longhaul" is an afterthought.

If Indeed You Are a FedEx Employee, You Are One of the Biggest Embarrassments That I've Ever Seen on This Board.
It Is Obvious That All You Want to Do You Is Cause Hate And Discontent.
There Is No Sense In Such a Condescending, Reckless Statement!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I Have Been With FedEx For 20 Years and I Remember When FedEx Purchased American Freightways, I Also Remember All the Feelings and Concerns That I Had at the Time, Not Knowing What Was Going on, Not to Mention All the Rumors That Was Spread by Irresponsible People Such As You, You Know, People That Don't Have a Clue to What Is Going on with This Company.
I Also Think That You Owe These Fine Folks an Apology, but I Know That an Apology Is above You!! So I Will Apologize for You As You Have Embarrassed Us All!!!!!!!!:ranting2:

First and foremost Nug you need to learn how to spell and speak English properly. Its obvious that you've worked for FedEx for 20 years. I am not spreading rumors or being negative. I am stating the facts and that is it. In fact I must say that you owe me and this whole board an apology for your mean demeanor and your moronic spelling. It seems to me Nug that your deep seeded anger and resentment is directly related to you being employed at FedEx for 20 years and me stating the facts about how terrible FedEx treats its employees.

I have to agree with Nug, first off fastmover explain how management is treating you so poorly since nothing has changed yet. Second explain what benefits you are loosing or are being changed for the worse since Watkins joined FedEx.

My suspicions are that you are a plant designed to cause problems but that is just me. I suggested that you leave and go back to roadway but you did not respond how about telling us why if you are so unhappy at National why you stay.

Finally I could not see anything in Nugs post that he needs to be apologetic about but every one of your posts on this thread have been negative with very few facts .

By the way I very seriously doubt if you are an employee of any of the FedEx companies and pretty sure I know who you do work for.

Where do you get these "FACTS" from? Its funny nobody else has the same views about this but you and that my friend is a fact! What benefits have changed for the worse? I know it's not the prescription coverage because that was a great change. I don't have the comparison chart in front of me so I cannot post about it but I do know they are better than before.

Oh one more thing there professor fastmover.

This should be "In fact I must say that you owe this whole board and I an apology for your mean demeanor and your moronic spelling."

You should always put yourself last for example.

Me and my friends always thought we were cool because we dropped out of school so now we are not as smart as we really think we are.

It should be "My friends and I"

Anyway I have been through many of your post and before you go telling others how they should use proper english and spelling you should make sure you have done so yourself. At this point I'm sure many will be proof reading your post and pointing out all of your mistakes. I am guessing you are angry with FedEx because they turned you away for lack of qualifications or the fact that they seen right through you and realized just how shallow you really are. For someone that is as miserable as you are I cannot figure out why you would still be here? Are they really hurting you that bad? Would you put yourself and your family through such horrible experience? Please dont forget to post links to back up your facts about benefits changes for the worse.

fastmover2000 and Nug, Please stop the personal attacks. Debate facts all you want but but don't make it personal

Thanks

OK, I HOPE I SPELLED OK RIGHT! lol:bgroovy:

I don't think there is any need to be worried, if things are slow they would have been slow even if FX had not purchased the co.

FX has a knack for buying stable strong co's and building on what was already there, not ripping it up into little pieces. I.E. Roberts Express = Custom Critical
Viking / American Freightways = FedEx Freight
RPS = FedEx Ground

I think what some are eluding to when saying Watkins is a cheap carrier was the statement by Doug D. where he says they will be a lower cost alternative for shippers, that does not mean the are a lower class than the rest of FX only that they will offer a lower cost product to the customer and hold trlrs longer getting better capacity while taking a little longer to get it there, this is not a bad thing it is something customers have been asking for and will grow Nationals base.

We at Freight are no better than National and vice versa, and we are both part of a well planned corporation that will be around a long time.

I think some of the animosity stems from worry, people on both sides worried that the other will take work from them, and yes that may actually happen to a degree. But with the new product offering to the customer the base will expand and there will be more than enough for all, unless there is a downturn in the economy which would do the same even if we were still independently owned co's.

FXFE has not had any layoff's in recent memory, but I think with the slowdown of freight in the ltl sector, and given the amount of new driver's fed ex freight has hired we may see a few layoff's

FXFE not having layoff's in recent memory may be subject to change, due to the slowdown for all ltl freight companies, and the amount of new hire's freight has hired in the past year.
