It is only law in 2 states California and Ohio.If
I want to smoke I will do just that cause I have rights to.Nobody I mean nobody aint gonna tell me what I can and cannot do.

Since this is my first post......I might as well make it a good one. You want to talk about rights..... I have the right to be able to work in an environment that allows me to perform my job to the best of my ability. When you are allergic to tobacco....not just the smoke, mind you.....but the residue that your smoke leaves on every surface of the tractor that it comes into contact with......that your ArmorAll and Lysol and Fabreeze and SmokeOut don't have any effect on...It makes it very difficult to get the job done...See you may think the cab is clean.....but the fact is........IT'S NOT!!!!! C'mon guys.....you say you're adults......Act like it.... The fact is, the Company YOU work for has a policy.... If you don't like it......Cry to your wives.... or your girlfriends...... But leave it @ home. Come to work....do your job....you don't have to be a Company Man...But just grow up. By the way......Glad to see we have such an active group. Just found out about this the other day......I KNOW I'll make lots of friends here.......HA HA HA HA

It's your right not to smoke and I respect that.I smoke and I have my rights as well.If you want to make this a full fledged argument
I am all for it.ARE YOU READY.:chairshot:

Then don't transfer to my SC.....cause' they quit smokin' in our trucks almost a year ago. And the policy is being enforced....by the MAJORITY of the drivers......the non-smokers. See....the smokers are like homosexuals...they are very loud and forceful to bellow out their rights....not worrying about anyone elses....but...once the silent majority see that they have an impact.......change comes...... have fun @ your new job.

just a word to the "wise". be careful of your wording and your analogies. dont want you to get shut out before you get started.................

Let me get this straight SKippy, You're comparing me to a **** sexual because I smoke? I'ld be glad to come down to your SC to explain the difference between a homosexual and a smoker! The computer is like a CB radio only it's easier to find someone on the computer so my advise is to not let your Shirely Temple a** out wiegh your Jack Danials mouth. Just a suggestion. Press on

Nighthawk, You are right, you do have a right to smoke but what makes your right to smoke more important than another drivers right to be able to breath fresh air and not go home at the end of the night smelling like stale smoke?

Even the most well intended smoker can clean that truck as much as possible at the end of the day but the smell is still there. You just can't smell if because you are so used to the smell.

I know this is a touchy subject for everyone but this has become a good debate.

Please keep your posts civil so we can keep this thread on topic and keep it from getting ugly.

Thanks

The only comparison I was making is the fact that both groups feel THEIR rights outweigh evryone elses.....and THEIR knee jerk reactions to anyone who DARES speak out against them is met with the same venomous tongue. And both groups.....however similar....are the vocal minority...... When you step back and look @ it with eyes open. Skippy out!

Now most know me on these truckingboards by now.
All the time I spend posting on a lot of different threads my wife thinks its a part time job for me to stay current with trucking issues.
With that said, most also know I'm an old gear jammers from back in the J.Hoffa Sr. days.
I've met all kinds of people over these many years.
I've learned rules to deal with most everyone.
Some people however are lunatics, and its better to get away from them as fast as you can, before you do something really stupid to get yourself in a jam.
For whats is worth.
We've lost many rights to a few loud mouth people getting groups together than a bright lawyer to lean on our government.
But for the most part the majority still rules in a lot of issues.

Smokers in general don't care very much for non-smokers.
I can speak from first hand,as I was a chain smoker.
As a smoker there was nothing more anoying than a reformed smoker.
Now that I'm a non-smoker,I can see both sides.
As a smoker all my windows, hands, teeth, and fingers were yellow.
I threw my burned up butts anywhere I wanted.
I was puffing away in small areas causing others to cough.
When I smoked I never thought of any of this but can clearly see it now.
So I see this intire issue as being a case of rudeness.
If you smokers concider the rights of us non-smokers,than smoke yourselves into the ground you have our blessings.
But if you insist on getting in our face, than we will be the ones getting our groups to find a smart lawyer,or congressmen to lean on the government to protect our right.
Bottom line, you want to smoke,ok don't do it around me,thank you.

Wow this topic has surely manifested itself away from the company policy of "No Smoking on or in company property"

Everyone feelings are getting hurt, burned, and made fun of. Most of the posts are in good taste, some very valid points, some funny "In your face slams" This topic has the capability of going on forever and ever with no agreement ever being made.

Smokers rights have not been taken away. You can still smoke anywhere else you want to other than Con-way property. (Smoke a pack before you come to work, smoke a pack on your way home. Thats your right and Con-way has not taken that away, Just don't smoke while working for Con-way. It's plain and simple and will work out for everyone in the long run)

There is a company in Ohio that FORBIDS and BANNED smoking ON or OFF company property. You will not be hired if you are a smoker, If you are already employeed by them and you get caught with Nicotine in your system you get put on some Employee Assistance Program to stop. After time, if you get caught again you will be TERMINTATED! They find out through Random Drug Testing.

Now, Talk about a smokers rights being violated there? That is definitely a sore subject and that company has been sued by the employee who was terminated. If the company wins, this will set precedence and other companies will follow. Con-way might just adopt this and most guys will either be forced to quit or lose their jobs completely.(I said: If the company that got sued wins, so the can of worms is still closed)

Remember: The no smoking law included Ohio and Con-way decided to blanket itself in an all inclusive policy. (All or None and the law won)

The ultimate winner here will be the Non-smoker cause they have nothing to do with this, they are the innocent victims of being subjected to smoke, and residual smoke.
Smokers willing to quit have many options, company will pay for it as a one time deal but you need to WANT to quit, not try to quit. I know from the other members it is the HARDEST thing to do but it WILL work if you stay committed to your health. I applaud the ones who found it hard to cross the line, dug deep and actually crossed the line.

My point? This topic will go on forever. Smokers against Non-smokers, and it is not that. It's a policy that Con-way decided to administer for all it's components. Follow it or leave the company.

Like the Union and Non-Union topics, and No Smoking laws being passed everywhere. I think it would be a great idea to have a Smoker and Non-Smoker forum. The smoker can smoke and joke about the joys of smoking, the latest tobacco product etc...
The non-smoker can talk about the health benefits of being smoke free, provide some good links for the smoker who is willing to quit etc...
..........just a thought

You miss the point......it's NOT just about work.....Like Apostolic said....until he stopped he had no concern for the non-smoker......IN ANY SITUATION.....this is a respect for others issue.... I don't care what their pickup in the parking lot smells like.... If they drive the truck that I have to spend all day in.....they are gonna have a problem with me......and now......thank GOD..... after it being a COMPANY policy for the 10.5 years I've been here......COMPANY.....not just CSE.......I'm glad to see Con-way stepping up to the plate and enforcing policy.

George - I wasn't referring to you as being homosexual because you smoke.....Just the attitudes are very similar.

But....if you still wanna come on down......We'll go fishin' or something......K?

I got your knee jerk reaction right here! Your comparison sucks! I'll stop now 'cause my responses just seem to up and disappear. CFer...Thank you for your time.....TOXIC..Love the little blue light guys...Press on

With all that said, this whole thing is deviding and conquoring, turning dsr against dsr, exactly the way management 101 teaches it. Discourse and kaos among the rank and file is what they like. "You get more work out of a discontent employee than you do out of a content one." Management 101 at it's best, and they didn't even have to think this one up! It just fell right into their corporate lap. What a deal....Press on
