ABF | Thanksgiving

And........those hundreds of companies went out of business, and the former owners and management of those companies re-incarnated themselves as non-Union carriers...........Consolidated Freightways and Con-Way come to mind.........with NO argument or pushback.........and especially NO organizational effort......to those formerly Union companies.

Mr. Hoffa’s organizational efforts in LTL Freight are.......laughable,......if they weren’t so pitiable......

I always wondered how different the state of the Teamsters organizing drives would’ve looked like under Ron Carey.......

Well........the NMFA was still in effect and ABF, and the four companies under the YRC umbrella were still in business,.....when the IBT recommended accepting a contract with a different time frame to the ABF Teamsters during the 2013 NMFA negotiations......

Which,.....in effect,.....broke up the NMFA.

When UPS bought Overnite, and imposed the “card check” language on their new acquisition,.....many people asked why the IBT didn’t insist that the new UPS Freight employees go under UPS’s contract........
Or,......as an LTL freight carrier, place them under the NMFA.....?.

Why did the IBT create a.......third contract.......when there were two perfectly good, tried and true, established contracts that UPS Freight would’ve fit into seamlessly?

You raise valid points. However when the NMFA was instituted there were possibly a hundred or more LTL companies under that umbrella and non-union outfits were in the very small minority. Today there are a tiny number of Teamster outfits in LTL compared to past years and non-union have become quite large and competitive. "Master" doesn't quite have the same meaning/effect as it once did.

Sign posted at our Terminal says "If willing to Work" they will run us as needed. Not a You have to!! Get your Term managers in Line!!!

was just told that if I don’t work thanksgiving I will get a warning letter. Told them it’s a paid day, they said so what. What gives?

My opinion, my advice..take off if you want, take a letter, file grievance. have it retracted. it cannot be one way here, another elsewhere and so on. my guess they wouldnt write it. as well, ask mgmnt if they are working, then tell them you arent. paid holidays are just that, holidays..not work days..fight for it..

Thanks for the advice iam4us. Is there anyone who runs linehaul who’s terminal is not making them work. If so what linehaul terminal?
They have us working at 086. Dispatchers Grant and Holbrook (both dispatchers were here when I started almost 18yrs ago) will be working Thursday.

Brother, don't let the thought of getting a warming letter influence you; on average I get 2 or 3 warning letters a year. The old Transportation manager (Keith Burke) used to send stacks of them out at a time. That is just CYA for managers at ABF. They send warning letters out to show the corporate office they are disciplining their employees for not doing (what they consider) their job. The joke at 086 is more toilet paper.

Don't forget to protest each and every warning letter. That is very important and could save your job if the company ever gets a wild hair (probably not going to happen) and decides to make an example of you.

Our terminal was an HVXP Next Day Exchange Point. Our dock crew was there to jockey and assist the UE guys.
They began to force guys to work through the holidays like into Thanksgiving morning and Christmas morning so that the terminal was open .

They are re-defining what a “holiday” is........It used to be a given that it was a day off with pay........now it’s merely a work day with premium pay.....

Once we accept that.......definition......they will work on removing the premium pay....

Read your history, guys.........A hundred years ago, 12 hour days, 6 days a week, and no such thing as “ holidays”.......is what made people like Frick, Carnegie, and J.P.Morgan incredibly wealthy.....

And our Captains of Industry nowadays,.....are longing for the “ good ol’ days”.......

Tomorrow is Thanksgiving. Whether you're working or not, I want to wish all of you guys...and gals..and even the "ignored members"..(...the milk of human kindness is flowing thickly in my veins today..)......a very safe and gracious Holiday.

Me,....I'm going to be rolling on the floor with the Grandkids....they seem to regard Grandpap as some sort of mobile Jungle Gym......
I'll be too sore to shop on So-Called Black Friday........my recovery day.......

And I hope all of you waddle into work Monday morning, wiping turkey grease off your contentedly smiling lips........
