So are there actually Teamster Drivers now that do not know how to shift? That is what it has come down to?
I don't think so. But I did hear that they road tested a guy who didn't have doubles on his license the other day. Presumably they would get the endorsement before actually starting work. The main reason is automatics have lower maintenance costs and get better fuel economy. But its popular at the break table to lament the lack of skill in the new generation, just like its been since the beginning of time.

I heard if you take tour cdl test with a automatic that's what your licensed for, meaning you can't drive a standard....
So if a junior guy only has an automatic license and a senior guy has a regular license, the junior guy would end up with a new truck and the senior guy would end up with the old crappy truck? And to go further, if the new truck is hooked to a 500 mile run and the crappy standard shift truck is hooked to a 300 mile trip how does that work?

Damned good question

I don’t know? I wonder if Abf accepts that kind of license....

I think I would file a seniority grievance if it was explained to me that the run of my seniority preference had to go to a ...junior man....merely because ABF had not trained him properly........

We all had to be..."trained"...to run Relo-Cubes,.....Liftgates,......two-wheelers........PDA's..........and so on......

If it was the case that you didn't have the proper license to "operate" ABF's equipment,......well, then,...it was ABF's responsibility to see that ALL people on the seniority board are trained in ALL the skills needed...

I'm sure there are some female drivers out there who had some "Brother Teamster" watch them struggle with a converter gear in a gravel lot......(....gender shouldn't have anything to do with it....if a fellow Teamster of any..."persuasion"...was struggling, I'd definately help.....)(....same as age wouldn't have anything to do with it...)....

That being said,.....I'm also very sure that some conditions are..."ripe"......for certain people to play the "helpless", or "clueless",...or the "I'm endemically and chronically Stupid"...card,....in order to gain some small advantage over their fellow Teamsters......

Everyone pays the same amount in dues,....therefore everyone is expected to be able to do every job.......

Now,.....if CDLs are being issued with an "Automatic Only" restriction,........just think how badly the so-called "seniority" in a NON-UNION barn will be violated......

The mind boggles..........

What if the new truck is equipped with a three on the tree???

Hah! I actually know how to shift a Duplex,.....or Triplex....or Quadruplex.....the proper way...courtesy of the U.S.A.F.

The instructing sargeant informed us that the first time he saw any of us hooking the steering wheel with our arm to grab both sticks,...he would break off the offending arm and jam it up our posterior,...so that we would have to stand up to shift grabbing both sticks......

This shouldn't happen on linehaul, All linehaul tractors are automatic 16 and up.

Good point. This will be a city driver problem, then.....For probably the next 10 years as they assign all the pre-16 road tractors to the city.

A drill instructor yelled at me, THAT HE WAS GOING TO HIT ME SO HARD, MY WHOLE FAMILY WAS GOING TO GRUNT!!!!

That's a Good One........My dad was a Navy vet....and he was never known for his political correctness, or delicacy of language.....
But the first time I ever heard : "Get your Head out of your A**" .....was basic training.......

I marveled at the....apporopriateness and simplicity of the phrase.......and wondered that my dad never used it......

Those D.I.'s must've laid awake at night ,....thinking of new ways to get an eighteen-year-old's attention........
