I applied for road driver position, and received an email saying the will contact me for phone interview within 1-2 days. I applied 2 days ago. I have a very good record. So, few questions, what is the payscale at FXF, do you stay in hotels, do you have an assigned truck? I understand I may be working dock, how often do you do that and for how long? Thanks

wow, I figured they paid more than that for road driver. thank you. I'll still take interview and see what all happens, can't hurt!

Most money I have ever made. Just got to get to that 3 yr mark. Also best job I have ever had.
not slamming you at all. I figured it'd be more than that, considering FXF is the largest LTL carrier. I'll be out of NC, if I take position. I have an opportunity(maybe) with ABF or FXF, so far. They both have their pros and cons.....

As a road driver you get paid your hourly rate for drops (30 min.) hooks (30min.) Fueling (15 min) and for a single trailer (15 min). It adds up.

The highlighted portion is the lowest pay scale. Hey guys, does NC have a B scale and would the Kernersville area be in that?

I worked for ABF as a road driver and currently for FedEx and I’ll tell you that starting out for ABF you’ll definitely be extra board and sleeping out 3-4 nights a week plus working Saturday’s, Sunday’s whatever day they give you lol until you can grab a bid run. As for FedEx no weekends unless you sign up for extra work and you will be home every night. You will just do meets or hub. The only difference is that for ABF you cannot work the dock because of the union and for FedEx if you go into a hub there will be a chance of dock work but at least your getting paid hourly for it. ABF does pay for hook and drop, 15 min per hook or drop but if you go into a major terminal like Carlisle, Winston or ATL you won’t see a penny. FedEx you make and break your set at whatever terminal you go to it doesn’t matter. FedEx is at .68 per mile and I believe ABF is only at .63 may have gone up from last contract but can’t see them being over .64

Not all centers make .68 a mile see charts of different pay scales above.

FedEx freight has a much bigger presence then ABF in my area, over all of course they are much bigger company. Not staying in a motel I think would be a bonus.

Would it depend on the terminal as to how busy a new road driver would be? Kind of gopher and fill in wherever needed days or Nights, more dock than miles?

If you are at a bigger terminal you can expect to have better run options, more meets as well. As for smaller terminals you may have less than 400 mile runs which means dock work at night before returning to your home terminal. Bottom guys at a big terminal can do a double or triple turn which saves them from dock work at times

great info guys! THANK YOU! ESPECIALLY the former ABF guy. I have a state cert forklift from 2010(haha OLD)....Just curious, took 1 day and got an email from FXF saying they will contact me in the next day or two(yesterday) for a phone interview(couldn't believe how quick THAT WAS. I applies Saturday night and mon afternoon they sent it to me!)...so what does that consist of, and how long, primarily, does it take to get on with FXF, if hired?

I understand I was speaking for the CLT terminal I’m sure if he wants to go to the Greensboro terminal it’ll be the same or 1 tier down
yeah...applying for greensboro terminal, turns out it's only 7 miles from my house and literally 1/2 a block down from where I worked in granite countertops for 8 years at! Dunno about ABF, got a text saying my former company said I had 2 accidents(had to reply to email and explain each one), which I didn't....I was hit twice at 2 different truckstops within 4 years. Why was I blamed? I called and reported after it happened. dang general freight liars!

It can take 1-2 months to get hired on. But it really just depends how quickly they move with your road test/physical. Once you take your road test it should be another 2 weeks for your start date. At least that’s how it was for me and the guys under me. Another good thing about going to the Greensboro terminal for you is that there are RUMORS of FedEx opening another terminal in the Salisbury area meaning maybe some guys from both Greensboro and CLT will transfer when the new one opens and gives you a chance to move on up quickly. Good luck with the rest of the process

nah...Salisbury is 45 minutes from me...greensboro is a mere 7 minutes from my house. Got the phone interview out of the way. Answered all questions. EASY! Said starting pay is $22(and change) an hour (0.54.9412...crazy number...but 54cpm) top pay at 3 years is 68(crazy a$$ number again....rounded out to 68)cpm and $28 an hour. Did confirm working on dock....oh well....I'll def bite at it. Said next is to pass onto 'hiring manager'. She said takes about 4 weeks for completion. Guess they seriously need some guys on....could be what you are saying, moving a bunch of guys down to Salisbury that are already driving up from there? Who knows? It'll take about 3-4 weeks before I hear anything(IF) from ABF...so don't want to put all my 'eggs in one basket'. I have a great driving record and now is the time. REALLY loved my short stint in LTL and want to retire doing it! My main question is, will I get an assigned truck or no? Even on scheduled run?
