Greetings all,
After 31 years of New England winters and Boston traffic (the last 10 yrs. with A. Duie Pyle), I'm tapping out. I need some southern charm!
I couldn't find a recruiter link on the SEFL website. Does SEFL use recruiters? Are they on LinkedIn? If so, what's the best avenue of contact.
SEFL seems to be a mirror image of A. Duie Pyle, judging by the comments on this website. The similarities on service, core values (A. Duie Pyle), equipment and reputation are uncanny upon comparison.
While hustling 20-25 stops a day are energizing and 50-55hrs./wk are fairly compensated, I see a more relaxed schedule in my future , as I near retirement.
Thanks, in advance, for any input and apologies if I have wasted anyone's time.

I've worked for both. That being said if your nearing retirement I'd suggest going linehaul at SEFL if you can. There is no OT like at Pyle when you hit 45 hours. They haul lots of carpet and peddle in 53' trailers. They'll rotate off city drivers and stack the city trailer like a linehaul trailer. It's not the worst company to work for but not one I'd wanna be bottom man at especially nearing retirement. Other than that you know the drill be seen not heard.

Depending on location, traffic is horrible in many areas in the sunbelt and people are people no matter where you go. Not trying to discourage your move, I just don’t want you to have expectations that aren’t fulfilled. Where are you thinking about relocating to ? Sabresfan is right, you’ll more than likely be peddling a 53’ and they haul lots of carpet that has hurt lots of drivers over the years. 20-25 stops is the norm here as well. I have personally seen management at the Sefl center I worked at try to run older hands off that had many years of tenure by sending them out with exclusively trash freight (not their regular route) that is very taxing on the body. Just be aware before you go that these people are not saints like they would lead you to believe.

If you are close to retirement then listen to frootloop and Sabersfan. You will be expected to hit 4-5 delivery stops per hour and will run either a 53’, 48’, or final mile hino truck in the city. It’s rough on a young man and will injure you as an old man if you let it. I suggest you take it at a nice steady pace and not let those supervisors looking to climb the ladder rush you. As long as you aren’t having accidents or injuries then you will keep your job. I see older drivers have 3 or more returns on a regular basis and haven’t been fired yet. The college genius that routes his loads has yet to back off and realize that older drivers can’t or won’t run like a top fuel dragster all day. That said, sefl is having a terrible time hiring drivers period at the moment because word is out that they try to work you like a rented mule and most don’t want to put up with it when you can go down the street to another carrier or different industry and get a job.

Thanks for the quick responses.
I anticipate beginning at the bottom with any new company. I am just trying to do my homework before making any move. A. Duie Pyle has been good to me and I am thankful. It is time for the next chapter. I have grandkids in the Roanoke area and looking towards hiking in the mountains.
Thanks again and be safe out there!

In Roanoke I'd look at getting on with Pitt-Ohio if their hiring. They have outstanding health insurance thats right up there with the best of them in this industry. Best of luck.

If you can hang in with Pyle there are plans to have 3 Virginia terms by 2020. Norfolk, Richmond and Roanoke. Transfer then and yes, do linehaul or better yet, shuttle. That gets you home daily.

I need to clarify. Not by 2020 but sometime in 2020. One of the l/h dispatchers already wants to transfer

You all seem to have hit the mark on LTL! Great to be surrounded by knowledgeable folks!. Is that contagious to dispatchers? Just kidding, I like my travel agent.
I am planning to be settled in the Roanoke area within the next 3 years.
I have seen the hybrid of Pyle and SEFL shuttles on I-81 when visiting the kids, but I am a little surprised that Pyle would venture into friendly territory. Is there that much work that would attract Pyle outside of their core area?

Virginia is one of those areas where SEFL would rather have Pyle come to. My friends run lots of empties out of VA for SEFL. This way they don't have to pull interline freight out of there in the wrong direction and splitting the cost.

All regionals that interline have a cross over point, standard business. If you cust in Va if you gave SEFL Frght for Md or De it would take 2 days giving it to Pyle while Pitt Ohio, Ward and all the national caries do it over night. Works the same way goingthe other way.

If you work out of York then you see the guys all the time. Think there are 4 to Raphine and 2 to Richmond. They use the trucks with the deer bumpers.

You nailed it!

Freight is slow right now in roanoke, and it seems that way with al ltl in the area. I believe it is an early start to the election year blues.

Being bottom man means the same as being top seniority city driver at Sefl. Only on vacation choice does seniority matter. We used to bid routes. That was taken away. We used to bid start times. Haven’t had a bid in years now. Your position in the pecking order here is determined by how close you are with local leadership. If ever there was a company that needs a handbook or work rules this is it. Keep this in mind when considering employment here. There are better options. FedEx upsf od

Your absolutely right! If there is a place that seniority means anything, it would be linehaul. You will never see a handbook at SEFL because if they had one, they would have to treat everyone the same. Now, if you've worked here as long as I have, you know everyone is not treated the same.
