ABF | Transfer

Anyone no what all you lose if you transfer to a different Terminal ?
If you transfer without a change of operation you lose terminal seniority(bottom of the list). You will keep your company seniority for building up vacation time, anniversary's ect....

So basically you keep your vacation time, but you are the last one to choose when you can use it

I’d check with the union halls in the area you want to move to. The only way to move in the Midwest is to be on lay-off for 30 days or more. Otherwise you start from scratch.

In my area it think it’s called a 10-10 not 100% sure

Clarifacation on 10 10, 5 5 there is not a lot of freight knowledge at our hall
The 5-5 is where you can transfer out of your terminal to a terminal that is hiring drivers without having to start over on your vacation. You do fall to the bottom of the board though. You have to be on lay-off for 30 days or more to use that.

I know 3 drivers that had to "quit".. re-apply, and hired upon recommendation from fmr manager. They then started from scratch.
1 moved to diff region, 1 coo, didnt want to follow work, so reapplied at a term closer to his home. 1 reapplied and was taking too long so went elsewhere.. All started over on pay, vaca, etc.. Perhaps different for diff regions.. just my experience with friends.

In the Eastern region it’s under voluntary transfer (I can’t find it) we had 2 guys transfer into our barn both kept their company seniority

Ya I wish we had that. If you’re not in lay-off you have to start over on everything. Sucks for guys just relocating.

That’s the way the central region works unless you’re in lay-off.

Article 5, Section 5 ..(5-5) of the ABF NMFA states that you can request transfer, after being laid off thirty days. You will lose your former terminal seniority, be placed on the bottom of the seniority list,......but retain your company seniority for fringe benefits only (vacation).

Now,.....as a steward, I had filed two grievances for guys working as casuals in a terminal 30 miles from ours, where they had seniority....and no work.....
....And that terminal where they were working as casuals, was going to HIRE off the street,....7 guys due to retirements(..All on the same day, no less...)....

Should be a "slam-dunk", right? Well, no.......We filed the grievances AFTER they hired off the street,....and AFTER our two casuals requested , in writing, as per contract,....to transfer in......and ABF refused to transfer our......EXISTING....employees.....who were WORKING AS CASUALS at the hiring terminal.......

I have piles of paperwork on this case,........Pictures, testimony of ABF Terminal managers, seniority lists, pay stubs......All kinds of documentation......
ABF's ....ENTIRE case was: "We don't want those two"........

The Union LOST,......Didn't we, Ernie?......in Executive session......

Decision reached 9 months after throwing those two guys to the wolves,.....One quit in disgust,....and the other hung on after filing bankruptcy to keep his house.....

Good Job, ERJAC!

So,......Yes, there is "transfer" language.......Of Sorts, I guess......

You're NOT SUPPOSED to have to quit,........That just benefits the company,.....And ..WHO CARES about the Laid Off Employee?

I would like to transfer to a warmer climate, can do bottom of the board been there done that just hate the cold, besides bottom guys don't do much anymore anyway just my observations

Hah! You better learn Spanish to be understood where you want to go.........

And not just the swear words........I understand ABF has a terminal in Palm Beach Fla. that needs a man to do a daily run to Mar-A-Lago.....with unspecified freight.
You need all clearances............
