ABF | Arcbest® Announces First Quarter 2019 Results

My friend works at OD, trust me our health care is a lot better.
Can you explain some of the ways ABF health insurance is better? A few examples would be great. For example, individual deductibles at both companies, family deductibles at both companies, out of pocket expenses at both companies. Maybe some information on things like flu, shingles, hepatitis A&B vaccines? How about dental and eye coverage? What does OD plan pay versus Teamcare?

I fully believe you when you say our healthcare is a lot better; I'm just wanting some information on how it is better.

Why don’t you find out ya lazy azz. Why should anybody look it up for you? Go to the Old Dominion site and ask them.

Do you literally expect people to find all of that information out? What are they going to do? Sit down with their friend's insurance information and jot it all down for you? Lol

Barring going out and tracking down my OD friends, and getting them to reiterate their complaints to me .....and possibly putting them in writing.......
I can state with impunity the one unexpungable fact that seems to....get under their skin,....was that their employer required them,.....on a weekly basis,.....to pay back part of their wages to ......maintain their health insurance plan...

Not to improve it, mind you.....but merely to..."tip" .....their employer for going through all the exasperation and trouble of ......collecting the money to send to the insurer......
And that a lot of OD employees were a little....suspicious......that "maintenance fee" rate hikes always seemed to occur within a few weeks of any sort of pay raise OD had granted their workforce.

In that one instance alone,....I would think that our health insurance stands head and shoulders.......above theirs.....

Anything else I could tell you would be sheer anecdotal evidence..based on the complaints of my friends from OD over the years concerning the paucity and inadequacy of their health insurance.....

And I wouldn't want to deceive you with ....false information.

I invite you Old Dominion Trumpeters.. Go work there.. I Beg you..So much bitching about ABF, Go away...
And honestly, I would never say that one is better than the other at this point. But for my needs, being this far into a union truck driving career, I need pension years. So for me, a company like ABF would be a better choice.

But Old Dominion is a great company. I don't like certain things about how they do business, but I don't like certain things about how ABF does business, either. Nothing is going to be perfect.

If I were to quickly digress, I think Dayton Freight would be the one non-union company I would ever consider, if it came to that. But that's another story for another day.

I will.. 200.00 deductible per person and/or 400.00 per family.. 1000 out of pocket max per ind, 2000 per family.
No benefit annual limit.. 20.00 co pay for office visits hospital 100% after ded, surgery 100% after ded ambulance 100% Teamcare Lab (Quest Lab Card) 100% covered labs Imaging benefitthrough USIN,, 100 % covered ct, MRI, PET scans ..
I could go on and on, But there is no insurance plans offered that are better AND For No Cost!!! My wifes employer offers the same BCBS plan with out imaging, lab for 180.00 week for an individual, 210 wk for family.. Large corporation..

Do you know how much rail and subcontracting ABF uses? I am sure the answer is everything the contract allows. Do you know that OD uses virtually NO substitute transportation? Has not used any for years. They move all their freight with their own trucks and drivers. Maybe OD cares more about their people than you know.
OD cares MORE? Hmmmm, let’s see. Their OT ‘rules’ are draconian and, in my opinion, are in violation of the most basic labor laws. Employee co-pays for healthcare are...how much now? And let’s not even get started on the pension/401k argument. I’ve got several amigo’s that currently work for OD. Not all are happy there.

OD.......AND ABF.....Care about the bottom line only.....as does every other trucking company...
The Union contract only makes them.....think about their employees a little more.....

The overtime is.....proof of that. Trucking is the only major industry in America NOT covered by the Fair Labor Standards Act Of 1934......
.....along with tree sap gatherers, motion picture operators, taxi cab drivers and fishermen.........

They don’t HAVE to pay you overtime,......and they don’t HAVE to pay you minimum wage......(...mileage pay,...tonnage pay..)...

So......for their bottom line sake ONLY.......the non-Unions don’t pay overtime right up to the Federal HOS limit,.....or, sometimes,....to quell labor unrest,....they have some convoluted form of almost unobtainable overtime.....(for now...)

To Hell with what it does to families,......to Hell with what it does to employee’s health......More work with less employees,....and less money paid out.....

So,.....Let us be......”discerning”.....when we talk about companies.........”caring”.....about their employees.......

We are......cared about.....just as much as any other automotive part in the shop inventory that’ll keep the truck running.....

We are the....equivalent.....of a 12 volt battery, in management’s eyes......

What I expected is if someone/anyone is going to make statements regarding facts not publicly available, then those individuals offer up their insight into why they believe their statements. Anyone can make blatantly false statements.

For example, Sacs says I'm a "lazy azz" but I'm a road driver at ABF and up until last month I owned 2 small business (I sold 1 because I just didn't have the time to work it), I have a small farm with several hay pastures (not the business i own), i keep up a nice garden, and because ABF turned their trucks up and did a change of operations (took road drivers out of terminals 059 and 222) I find myself driving over 3200 miles a week (starting and ending in Atlanta traffic). I make a lot of money, over 6 figures, but I bust my a$$ for it. So being called a "lazy azz" is a blatantly false and untrue statement.

I said you was lazy expecting someone else to do your work. Asking someone else to produce something you could easily ask for yourself. Don’t really care if you’re busy in your real life. Anyone working here stays busy enough.

I think one of the hazards of being able to...post anonymously,...is that you're going to have to,......as Shakespeare put it...."Suffer the slings and arrows of.... outrageous misfortune.."

"Outrageous Misfortune"...in this case, Brother,.. means having to weather indiscriminate insults,....warranted or not....

I don't consider ANY truck driver, or freight person,...lazy.....Having done the job myself,....I understand the sometimes superhuman effort it takes just to get a...."normal"...day in trucking done,.....
....hence, my addressing you guys in the archaic term: "Brothers"........

I think you had a point you were trying to make regarding how employers treat their Labor force,.....Not sure if I agreed with your point,....

Hey!.....Even your erstwhile Correspondent, here,......has been on the receiving end of scurrillious, scatalogical taunts and baseless insults........
........I reflect back,...many years ago.....of the schoolyard,....and.....
.....I don't do things that way..........

Anyway,.........I don't think OD treats their employees any better that they have to,...to prevent any sort of organizing uprising....
It's a shame that their employees have resigned themselves to....handing over a part of their weekly pay to their employer,......for the "privilege" of having OD getting a...group health plan. The Teamsters have one, too,.....but we don't rebate back part of our pay......

I know you have been insulted too. I recall a year or so back someone calling you names out of the blue (you replied something about his IQ being below 60). But I get off the point, my point is our health insurance is negotiated with our contract. Or to state it as a declarative sentence, If the company didn't pay for our health insurance, then we would be paid that money in wages! Agree or disagree that is the truth. Our contract is negotiated with wages (economics for those checking my facts) last. The reason for this is so that all other factors (work rules, overtime, benefits, etc) can be deducted from our wages, then wages are considered.

And Brother (because we are both union members) this is not the best job provided health insurance I have had. The health insurance provided by Martin-Brower in the 1990's was better health insurance than we have. I keep hoping, and suspecting, that there are still some companies offering that excellent health insurance to there employees.

I wonder if you have been out in the non-union sector lately.

I consider my current health insurance just a hair below ABF's. Not much, but just enough that I notice tiny little things like a dollar out of pocket here and there.

When my wife had to have surgery a year ago, the people in the surgeon's office were literally ooohing and ahhhing over how good my insurance was. They said they hadn't seen insurance that good in probably 10 years.

This is a time of warfare against labor. They're just letting us hold on to our jobs long enough until robots can replace us. Okay? So the unions may not seem like they are doing much, but let me assure you it's ****ing bad out there, and wages and benefits have degraded so much over the last 40 years that you can't even imagine.

And while these automation scientists are talking about all the free time we are going to have to pursue our real interests, all I see is starvation in the streets. And Jeff Bezos and his HGH steroid body gleaming exaltedly in the sun, jerking off and reading Ayn Rand.

You were doing real good until you mentioned Ayn Rand.......

You are right about Labor being under attack. If you look at proposed legislation nowadays,.......90% is about Labor costs , in one way or another.......

The Teamsters health insurance I had back in the late ‘70’s, early ‘80’s.......administered by the Local H&W Fund,........not one of these mega-insurers,........was excellent. Didn’t pay a dime for......anything.....No co-pays, no doctor, no nothing....

Far cry from when I retired two years ago,.....pay the doctor, pay the specialist,....pay the anesthesiologist......pay the janitor.....

At least I didn’t have to pay my employer.......to keep my health insurance........

Ahh, yes........Ayn Rand........I can distinctly remember being deeply impressed by her writing........when I was 16.......

Age and maturity does not improve her style........

Hey, that's just how Jeff Bezos rolls. I don't tell him what to read.

No Brother, I have not been in the non-union sector in the last 18 years and and then only 2 years of the past 26 years (Martin-Brower was union not Teamsters). But if I became separated from ABF my priority for my next employment will be health insurance, above wages and retirement.

I agree with Canary regarding Ayne Rand. I read it when I was 12 or 13 (not exactly sure when) but I thought the whole premise was bull manure. The idea that only a few people are capable of leading, guiding, and inventing large corporations. Really, does this current college cheating scandal not show that anyone can succeed in ivy league schools? All you have to do is get in the door, put forth some effort, and follow the curriculum.

The point of college is no longer to teach you anything. It's to put you in debt so you are a good boy or girl when you get out of college.
