Confusion between automated driving and self-driving is dangerous

https://www.ccjdigital.com/confusion-between-automated-driving-and-self-driving-is-dangerous/

"Trucking’s migration toward automated driving has long been compared to the airline industry’s use of an auto-pilot system, but Bendix Director of Customer Solutions & Marketing-Controls Group T. J. Thomas notes that even with auto-pilot fully engaged, there are still two flesh-and-blood people on the flight deck at all times handling a variety of tasks related to safe flying."

A truck without a cab and driver takes to the road in Sweden

"Businesses around the world are getting excited about the prospect of driverless trucks given the growing shortage of drivers."

I bet they are... Excited about the dream.
I still do not hear, or see any business complaining they can’t get their freight moved because of the trucking industries excuse of a shortage of drivers. They encourage bringing in green card immigrants, and now 18-21 year olds so they can exploit their wages and benefits.

Wong says, 70 mph tractors will eliminate all delays and they will be no shortage.

Until I see one of these run the blistering cold in the Rockies through blowing snow, I will not be concerned. There are limits to this technology, limits that they still haven't figured out how to overcome.

Everyone freaks out when one of these prototypes rolls out on a sunny day and drives to the next city over, imagining how soon drivers won't be needed. We will be needed for the foreseeable future and we will not be taking a pay cut to cover the added expenses of autonomy.

Agreed, but there WILL be areas that they will be able to eliminate the driver. As a percentage of the total, the effect seems negligible. Local "farm to market" operations seem within reach.

SEC charges former Celadon executive in alleged fraud scheme involving used truck sales

https://www.ccjdigital.com/sec-char...tm_term=newsletter-2-daily-position-top-story

"The alleged scheme allowed Celadon to avoid recording losses on the equipment — the source of legal and financial troubles that plagued the company since 2017. Celadon just last month announced it had agreed to a $42 million settlement with the Department of Justice and the SEC to end a criminal investigation into its accounting practices from 2014-2016."

Perhaps, but as you say it's negligible.

In other news, has anyone noticed that Swift seems to be sporting a new logo in the shape of a shield? I can't help but draw some conclusions regarding the influence of Knight there.

New Company logo with the rebuilding of Swift after the merger. They have a local yard in Carteret NJ and all the new day cabs have the logo and the new trailers.

"Since 2017, Starsky has raised nearly $22 million to develop its technology that allows drivers to remotely pilot trucks from an office. The company’s eventual goal is to have unmanned semi-trucks on U.S. roadways with a truck driver operating the first and last mile of operation via remote control, Seltz-Axmacher said."

"Piloting trucks remotely will help solve the turnover problem within the trucking industry and will attract younger drivers, Seltz-Axmacher said."

Self-driving trucks begin mail delivery test for U.S. Postal Service

https://www.reuters.com/article/us-...ery-test-for-u-s-postal-service-idUSKCN1SR0YB

"TuSimple and the USPS declined to disclose the cost of the program, but Frum said no tax dollars were used and the agency relies on revenue from sales of postage and other products. TuSimple has raised $178 million in private financing, including from chipmaker Nvidia Corp and Chinese online media company Sina Corp.

The trucks will travel on major interstates and pass through Arizona, New Mexico and Texas.

“This run is really in the sweet spot of how we believe autonomous trucks will be used,” said TuSimple Chief Product Officer Chuck Price. “These long runs are beyond the range of a single human driver, which means today if they do this run they have to figure out how to cover it with multiple drivers in the vehicle.”

The goal is to eliminate the need for a driver..."

And the quest continues.

"Paccar is recalling approximately 1,837 model year 2018-2020 Kenworth T680 and T880 tandem axle trucks equipped with parking brakes on a single axle and certain models of automated manual transmissions."

"Paccar is also recalling approximately 5,051 model year 2017-2020 Peterbilt 520 vocational trucks. The company says that due to undersized wires, the connector between the cab power harness and the power distribution center harness may overheat and melt, possibly resulting in an engine shutdown."

Bad reception, delayed text get driver fired

https://www.fleetowner.com/driver-m...m=email&elq2=f42e9d426f6c49278377ca6381767a2b

"A truck driver was terminated for texting a message to his boss while in motion, even though he claims he was parked on the side of the road when the message was sent. The driver, 52-year old Glen Kraft, had worked for Nestlé, and said a poor mobile signal delayed his message, and made it seem as though he was driving"

"Kraft's story would be a "he said/she said" argument if it were not for a CBS Chicago, which not only covered the story but texted from the same spot Kraft did and got the same delayed result because of poor coverage."
