I remember driving those at Overnite. I remember sliding threw an intersection while I was bobtailing once. Those were some scary trucks when bobtailing in them. With all the weight in front those back brakes has a tendency to lock up. You learn pretty quick though after you :::shit::: yourself once. They were a pleasure to back though with a trailer. You could hit some very tight spots in those old Macks.

Train are you old enough to remember the front brake limiting valve?
Most guys used them wrong, they were turned off when bobtailing, when they should be placed to full, you then had steering axle brakes.
Worked good on wet roads if used right.

Curbside deliveries? 20 years of horses, hogs & goats before a I started my vacation years in freight.

French Quarter, Old Alexandria, VA, Washington St Market in Boston, Knickerbocker warehouses to Harlem, San Francisco and old Philly. Hump strap and a Johnson Bar.

Best job ever.

You sound like Hank Snow, (I've been everywhere)

I have the Johnny Cash version, but ya, all lower 48 and 3 Western provinces.

Edmonton to Key West and Brownsville; San Ysidro to Calais, ME.

I’m a lucky guy, but spent my first few years traveling blue roads and hauling garbage so I could see the country on the company dime.

I think it was a good investment.

Ever been through Oregon? Many parts are edible. And...smokeable.

Speaking of old tractors when I started with Red Star in 77 they had those MB cab over Macks. On my first day I had to ask a switcher what the second stick was for and how to use it

I think my first tractor was a Mack pulling a flat bed trailer, but I can't quite remember that far back anymore.

Don't work in Va, I was parked on the on ramp on I 81, with fan blades sticking through the radiator, HP told me I
was in a no parking area and needed to move.
I told him I had notified the company and if it needs moving, you handle it.
Never saw him again, they wreckered me a tractor from Charl.

Calls from officers to wrecker/tow companies are supposedly on rotation with those companies that are bonded & inured. Over the years there have been accusations that officers favored one company over another. The 'K' word (Kickback), has also been used by tow companies when they thought they had been bypassed for a call.

Breakdown on the N.J pike one time and try to get a vendor or tow truck, talk about a cluster f*** . they have certain sections for certain companys and some time the same company can't work on the other side of the pike. Talk about a racket but it is N.J. so go figure

Love the coast, used to stop at Multnomah Falls and run to the bridge and back. Gotta work out the kinks somehow. Never cared for Portland, more of a Eugene kinda guy.

One of the prettiest places I’ve been was US 101 out of Eugene south along the coast. CFI had a paper mill we picked up at that was off 101. There was a more direct route off I5 but you couldn’t take the road with a truck, curves so tight the nose of the tractor would be touching the rear corner of the trailer if you did.

I'm an East Coast trucker,...I did 90% of my trucking this side of the Mississippi........The only..."beautiful"....areas here are some isolated rural spots,.......
And some sparsely-populated rural mountain valleys in W. Va,........if you didn't mind all the abandoned cars and refrigerators at the bottom of the valleys....

Northern New Jersey is the very antithesis of a...."pretty"....place.....It's ...pretty awful,....in both a visual and aural sense.....
........and the denizens of that.....environment don't make it any better.......I'm surprised that most people aren't carrying their .....excess attitude ..in a wheelbarrow........

......And then there's New York City..........."Cultural Capital of the World..."...............no,...it's the dog sh*t and broken glass capital of the world.......at least, for those of us out of the "tourist areas"....that had to work there.....

First time into Hunt's Point, off the Major Deegan,....I made the mistake of stopping at lights and driving slowly to the market entrance........Load of boxed meat for Schaeffer,....friend of mine was sick and asked me to deliver it for him......
......Trailer doors were swinging wide open by the time I got into the Market..........

I always said if they raised the water level about 10 foot on the Hudson river,........it would be a vast improvement........Drown a lot of rats......and stock brokers.......

Your blather just shows how little you know about North Jersey or even NYC for that matter. Have a happy father's day anyway.

I would imagine you live there, ....so I guess my opinion of that area gets under your skin.
From '75 to '92 I ran North Jersey/NYC on average at least once a week.....sometimes twice....or even three times.
Living near PGH. means most freight goes east.
Sorry if my experiences of that area aren't......fond. Maybe we should speak to the Chamber of Commerce.......

And a Happy Father's Day to you, too.

Thank you. Yes, I do live in the NJ/NY metro area. But I'm sure you realize that what you experience in any metropolitan area when driving TT on the usual truck routes is not an accurate indication of what the area has to offer. I made many trips to your area back 40 or so years ago when I was a road driver for the company we both worked for back then. My opinion of that area based on those trips was quite negative but yet I realize I wasn't getting a true indication of the place. Places we go with TT's aren't usually the most desirable in any area.

PS - Your comments didn't get under my skin. Selfish left lane hogs get under my skin. :smile new:
