If he did fall to sleep he is wise to say so. I worked an accident a few years ago where the young driver went to sleep just before sun up but claimed another truck pulling a flatbed ran him off the road. A driver from another company who was behind him was asked to verify the driver's claim. Wisely he told the truth & said the driver had been on the shoulder & back on the highway several times. He had tried to alert him with his radio for several miles.
Another driver at the scene thought that driver should have lied & helped the driver. The driver told that driver he could have lost his job for dishonesty. The driver who went to sleep was discharged & rode a bus home. The safety man said he probably would not have lost his job had he been truthful & just got two weeks off. I think his local eventually got his job back for him but he lost a lot of time.
