Estes | Regional Linehaul?

It depends on the terminal. You may get hired and put on a schedule right away. But more than likely you'll be out 5 days home 2 or covering for drivers that are off.

This is something Estes really needs to address. There’s no reason extra board drivers should have to be out all week. Most LTL experienced drivers hear that and say what BumpDraft said. Most people are fine with laying out twice a week, but all week is unacceptable to most.
One of the main reasons I did not go with Estes when I came back into LTL. I like city work I do now but prior to coming here I was primarily a night runner. Didn't really want a bid , I like to get out and stretch my legs on the big roads in the O'dark thirty hours and see different places. Choice came down to floating (what R&L calls extra board) R&L, which is all out and back unless you volunteer to run system or team, or Estes being gone all week. R&L system guys run sleepers so no hotels. That five day away is what changed my mind.

Completely agree!! Hopefully in the future they implement the z board/green board all across the system. Oh and do away with bunk rooms for certain lay down runs

The funny thing is when I was on the extra board some of my best mileage weeks were weeks they got me home twice during the week.

I’m in an area where they currently don’t offer Z board, which is crazy. There’s a ton of competition for drivers. Drivers can go somewhere else and make the same money being home daily Or every other at the worst. We’re also 125 miles or less from 3 major breakbulk terminals, so there’s plenty of freight to justify keeping someone within a day of their home terminal.

Don’t you love doing a 15+ hour layover an hour or 2 away from home ?

A lot of Estes extraboard drivers prefer XB.

As far as people whining about doing extraboard, what happened to paying your dues? Run xb, accrue seniority and get a schedule run.

But no, everyone wants to be handed a cushy schedule as a new hire. Sure, OD will have you home everyday, but you're treated as an on-call driver and you arent gurenteed to run on your 10.

I can completely understand not wanting to run XB, But it's not like you'll be on it forever.

When I started, you needed 20 years to get a bid run.

No one in this conversation has said anything about giving a new hire a bid run besides you. The thing most seem to agree on is that forcing extra board drivers to be out 5 days is unnecessary and hurting hiring experienced LTL LH drivers. Estes is the only LTL company in my area (Midwest) that expects it's extra drivers to be out all week.

All we’re saying is if they’d get extra board drivers home more they’d have an easier time getting good candidates to apply and hire on in areas like mine where there’s a lot of carriers for drivers to choose from.

They got guys who stay out. For 2 weeks and some for 4. Then you got central on your day to go home asking what you wanting to do. Just because a handful dont go home does not mean we all want to be out here. They day to go home they wanna try toss a good west coast load at you.

I know of many drivers who have been XB for a long time (not by choice)...sucks.

I'm sorry I work for Estes and I'm on the extra board. First its not written in stone that youll be gone for five days. Do it happen yes. Some xb driver get home every other day or so. Coming into a company as a new driver you can't expect to get a bid run right off. You have to wait your turn. But the pay for a xb driver here at Estes speaks for it self. Lets see what a driver make at R&L being home everyday. I'll wait.

I'm gone 5 days 99% of the time. Only time I'm in during week is if I cover for someone or there was no freight beginning of year and they sent me in for 3 day weekend. Hard to get home when they send you deep into the the northeast.
