TForce | UPS Freight Diary:

401-ks can be a gamble investing in stock, however they will probably be the only pensions offered in the future.

I've been retired now for 11 years, and have to pay taxes on my pension and social security.
It doesn't seem fair because I paid into both during my working years.
But our government is always looking for ways to get more out of us.

401's aren't that great, they are convenient.
The company doesn't match so it's your pre tax money that goes in.
whenever you retire and start pulling from it it's going to be taxed at the tax rate that's in place when you retire, and taxes don't go down
You can also loose it all overnight as it's stock market investments
I've been putting 250 a week in a interest earning savings account for the last 19 years.
And have more than My brother that's been doing the same for 18 Months longer in a 401k.

i think if you chuck $250 a week in stocks, picking them on your own, you would do even better!

i still wasn't able to track my total hours worked per week. It seems like most of the time, i do a re-set during the week. i'm also in a hurry and i don't want to dork around with the eld.
i will try next week to figure something out.

Grumpy terminals:
harristown
bichmond (self-explanatory)

Friendly terminals:
Bethlehem (pa)
Hagerstown (md)
"Lake" Moonachie. (nj) Why do we call it "lake" moonachie? Drive by and find out.....
philly (possibly THE best terminal in the company)
Carteret (nj)
To be continued....

"Special" terminals.....
Baltimoron: Considering how much pressure they are under, they remain professional: cool, calm and collected. So i have to give them props for that.
Brooklyn: ehhhhhhh...............

1) Not doing so hot, as you can see. Still not driving a suburban......wonder why......?

2) Running tail OFF. Having a blast, going to terminals i have never been to/or terminals i haven't been to in a while. Everything is totally random and unexpected----this is one of the "advantages" to extra-board.

Any other questions, i can try to answer them.

3) Latest listening: NOTE these are very negative and i really don't want you to listen to them, but until i find stuff more positive (there's really not much good in podcasts):

See, this is your biggest problem when running linehaul----what to listen to.

epidsode 1 is SO captivating, but it's horrific and sickening.

i don't want you to listen to these, i'm just posting what i've been to lately.

Most Americans would be happy as a pig in mud making 45,000 before the end of July and you call that sad and lame???? Lol... I’m surely missing your tongue in cheek humor because you can’t be serious and if you truly believe that your doing bad on that paycheck then I’m speechless.....

No, i'm not joking; Majority of linehaulers, not just here at UPSF, but other companies have surpassed that YTD total by 5-10K. i'm one of the lowest paid linehaulers here at the company and in the industry. i'm probably a bit more conservative than most drivers in terms of rest---i'll pass to the lower men often and will often turn down friday work. My schedule is Sun-Thurs. Friday seems to be super busy.

The money could be good, as evidenced by my 2000+wk checks, but don't want to get burnt out. Health is more important than wealth.

i'm still having a blast and i still think this is the best job in trucking.

While I get that your lament is among fellow truck drivers on a trucking board.....my main point stands in that almost half of Americans make no where near the 85-90,000 you are on track to make and you coming off as starving or low paid I just find amazing regardless of what OTHER people make.
In addition, you add that you turn down work?? Now you cross into contradiction territory and your under-compensated posts lose whatever steam it had. You can't have it both ways....turn down work/make 100 grand.
I am not trying to pick a argument here brother, just that maybe it might be better to focus and be grateful for what you do make and worry less about what others make.
Give it a try and you just might start feeling more like a millionaire:)

Yeah, i wasn't blaming the company or society that my YTD total sucks and i'm still not driving a suburban; i am pointing out that my YTD pay is pitiful and likely the reason why is because i'm conservative and laid-back compared to most drivers.

i was just thinking about this: It's not how many miles you get, how fast the truck runs, how high the pay is to judge a linehaul job.

It's how much sleep you getting?

This is what REALLY matters now and in the long run.

Maxi is right that is a bit low for a linehaul guy, I'm a city man and broke 60 last week.
A road guy should be higher but the companies love for scabs is keeping most Road boards from working a full week consistently

Thank you. i am not only open to used, but this would be the only way; Even if i did theoretically make 100K, there is NO WAY i'm putting down 50K on a new suburban. 50K base price on new sub :confusion:

In the above example, with a new engine and trans (should be able to do that for well under 5K) it's like having a new truck.

i think the 73-91 versions are very rugged and easy/cheap to maintain/fix.

1) Unintended/ "unexpected" microsleep last thursday.

BAD BAD BAD BAD BAD
Admittedly the few times it happened before (both pre upsf and currently), i was VERY tired and struggling to stay awake so it was not so "unexpected." And during those times i would likely find a place to pull over and sleep, or was in the process of doing so.

However, last thurs morning, i was feeling "just fine," but it still happened; If you could imagine your computer screen just going down, for a sec, then coming right back up, that is what it was like, sort of.

After thinking about it, i realized that i had only gotten about 5 hours of sleep during the day (thurs) before coming on duty. And, while i got 8 hours the previous day, perhaps that sleep wasn't as high-quality as i thought? (likely so, compared to nightime sleep?)

So, while i physically felt "just fine," and not sleepy (so i thought), i was really tired without realizing it?

i feel that the only real way to cure tiredness/sleepiness is to get sleep. So, friday i pulled over(this was AFTER i left the hub) and napped for about 3 hours even though i was not struggling to stay awake. Although apparently i WAS tired if i was able to sleep for 3 hours....... Only waking up due to alarm because if i had slept more, then i would have run out of the 16 hours available.

We MUST to continue to discuss this very important topic in depth! This was VERY FRIGHTENING because, as i said, i DID NOT feel sleepy at all when it happened!!! This was the first, and hopefully last, time this has ever happened to me.

2) Have not had to sleep in a hotel for over 2 weeks, but perhaps this is not such a good thing after all (see above)?
